Intense temperatures rising: Spain weather forecast July 22-25

Weather alerts for extreme heat on Wednesday

Many regions experienced a slight relief in temperatures over the weekend after a truly scorching Friday July 19, the starting point of the first summer heatwave. But this up-and-down curve is set to be the trend all week.

The mercury will begin creeping up on Monday, reaching a peak on Wednesday and Thursday, before the thermometers dip a few degrees again in time for the weekend.

To top it off, rain will be practically nonexistent in an already unusually dry month, with the exception of a few showers around the northeast on Monday.

Monday July 22

Monday will dawn a bit overcast in southern Spain but this will quickly clear to another mostly cloudless day. There’s a chance of some weak, scattered rain in Cantabria and the Balearic Islands, which could spread to the coasts of Andalucía, but this is very unlikely.

The mercury will rise significantly everywhere but the Mediterranean, continuing to exceed 36ºC in the centre and south-west. Monday night will also be stifling, especially in the south-east, where the thermometers won’t fall below 24-26ºC.

Yellow warnings for high temperatures have been issued in Andalucía, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid.

Tuesday July 23

On Tuesday, the weather alerts have been ramped up to orange (significant risk) in Andalucía, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid, while a yellow warning has been activated in the Valencian Community.

Daytime temperatures will exceed 35ºC in a large part of the south and northeast, and the thermometers could easily reach 40ºC in the southwest.

Wednesday July 24

Another mostly bright and sunny day will see the temperatures shoot up again in most parts of the country, especially on the southeastern and Malaga coasts and the Mediterranean coast of Cadiz. Cordoba and Sevilla are poised to hit a boiling 42-44ºC but the mid-30s will be the norm across the board.

Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid and the Valencian Community will remain on orange alert for extreme heat.

Thursday July 25

Most of western Spain and the Levante region will have a little break on Thursday as the thermometers are expected to drop by a couple of degrees, but there will be few changes elsewhere.

It is very likely that the temperatures will remain above 36ºC in a large part of the interior of the southern and northeastern regions, the northern plateau, and the southern slopes of the Canary Islands, even exceeding 40ºC around the Guadalquivir. No major changes are expected in minimum temperatures, which will remain above 25ºC in the southwest and Mediterranean coasts.
