Isaac Peral House Museum in Cartagena could finally open by next summer

During the first half of next year, Cartagena will add another exciting tourist attraction to its extensive network of museums with the Isaac Peral House Museum.

The Callejón de Zorrilla birthplace of Isaac Peral, the illustrious inventor of the world’s first electric-powered submarine and torpedo boat, native of Cartagena, will finally be “museumised to show the scope of his invention and put it in the place it deserves,” said Cartagena Mayor, Noelia Arroyo.

Current forecasts are that the museum could be open before next summer, but it has already run into delays and is already taking longer than many people expected.

The company Intelligent Heritage will be in charge of completing the remaining works to fully repair the ‘Casa de Isaac Peral’, which was left pending by the first company awarded the project, as well as its subsequent transformation into a museum.

The execution period for the completion of pending works is four months, with a budget of just over 137,000 euros, while the museumisation has a maximum execution period of six months and is budgeted at just over 170,000 euros.

“We are eager to see the work completed on Isaac Peral’s birthplace and begin to execute the musealisation project, which will highlight a whole series of scientific and historical aspects that are related to the personal, family and professional life of the Cartagena submarine inventor,” said Mayor Arroyo.

In the Museum, objects, documents, images, plans and models will be on display, telling the story of the inventor and his invention, and placing both within the context of the contemporary history of Spain, which covers the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

In addition to his family life, represented by objects that have been preserved such as photographs and painted portraits that have been donated by Diego Quevedo, the museum will take the visitor to the bottom of the ocean, inviting them to delve deeper into the scientific side of Isaac Peral. To do this, there will be maquettes and models, along with other fundamental pieces that demonstrate the techniques and technology used by the inventor.
