An exhibition is being held at the Museo Arqueológico Los Baños in Alhama de Murcia to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Sisters of La Santa Mujer Verónica in the town, with the exhibits having been brought together in collaboration with the local Junta de Cofradías y Hermandades and the Town Hall.
The exhibits on display are 11 sculptures or statues of the Santas Mujeres Verónicas from different places within the Region of Murcia, and one of the aims of this exhibition is to highlight the importance of Veronica in the story of Christ. Saint Veronica is said to have been living in Jerusalem at the time of the crucifixion, and when she saw Jesus carrying the cross she was so moved that she gave him her veil so that he could wipe his forehead.
Jesus accepted the offer, and when he returned the veil the image of his face was miraculously captured on it. The resulting relic became known as the Veil of Veronica, and is a holy relic of similar importance to the Shroud of Turin.
There are grave doubts over this story and in fact there is no reference to it in the gospels, but nonetheless the pious and gentle figure of Veronica has been the object of worship throughout the Catholic world. The Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus was approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1885.
The exhibition at the Los Baños archaeological museum in Alhama runs until February 19 and is open during museum opening hours (Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 19.30, Sundays 10.00 to 14.00).
