ARCHIVED - July 15 to July 23 La Mar de Musicas international music festival in Cartagena
40 open air concerts in Cartagena by artists from all over the world
After the disruption of the Covid pandemic over the last couple of years the La Mar de Músicas international music festival returns to Cartagena in the early summer of 2022, with 41 artists performing between July 15 and July 23 at various venues in the city. The featured nation at this year’s event is the Dominican Republic.
The main venues hosting these concerts are the patio of the CIM building, the Real Club de Regatas, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Auditorio Paco Martín in the Parque Torres and the nearby Castillo Árabe, both close to the Roman Theatre.
Tickets for all concerts are available online here. On May 13 season tickets only went on sale, individual concert tickets will be available at a later date.
The schedule for the 2022 La Mar de Músicas festival in Cartagena is as follows:
Friday July 15
13.00: Laura Sam and Juan Escribano (Spain) perform their modern pop at the Real Club de Regatas, tickets 5 euros.
20.00: Xiomara Fortuna (Dominican Republic), the Queen of Fusion, in a free concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Ed Maverick (Mexico) shared a Grammy with C. Tangana and brings his American and European fusion to the old patio of the CIM building. Tickets 15 euros.
23.00: The star turn of the day is the veteran Italian singer Zucchero, who has sold over 60 million discs throughout his career and has collaborated with artists of the stature of Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, Paul Young, Brian Wilson, Mark Knopfler, Tom Jones and Bono. His greatest hit was Senza una Donna, and his concert in Cartagena is at the Auditorio Paco Martín in the Parque Torres. Tickets are priced at 35 euros.
Midnight: Vicente García (Dominican Republic) is described as a free talent, inspired by Motown and an acclaimed self-taught vocalist. Tickets for his concert in the Castillo Árabe are priced at 12 euros.
Saturday July 16
13.00: Marcelo Criminal (Spain) is a local from the Region of Murcia performing at the Real Club de Regatas. Tickets are available at 5 euros.
20.00: María de la Flor (Spain) is a violinist and singer-songwriter who was trained in jazz, flamenco and classical music and has tended towards traditional styles. She offers a free concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Rita Payés (Spain) performs her simple but multi-layered music accompanied by her mother, Elisabeth Roma, on guitar in the patio of the CIM building. Tickets are priced at 15 euros.
23.00: Melody Gardot (USA) is a jazz artist who was encouraged to take up music after suffering a car accident at the age of 19, and since then has travelled the world. Tickets for her concert at the at the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in the Parque Torres are priced at 35 euros.
Midnight: Cimafunk is currently one of the biggest acts in Cuba, a true Afro-Caribbean rock star. Tickets for his concert at the Castillo Árabe are available at 12 euros.
Sunday July 17
13.00: Firmado, Carlota (Spain) presents her maiden studio album Buenas y Malas Decisiones at the Real Club de Regatas. Tickets 5 euros.
20.00: Mula (Dominican Republic) is one of the young performers flying the flag for music in his home country. His free concert is in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Lido Pimienta (Colombia) uses her music to fight against race and gender discrimination and has received special recognition in Canada, where her album La Papessa was the first entirely in Spanish to be named Best Canadian Disc of the Year. Tickets for her concert in the patio of the CIM building are available at 15 euros.
23.00: Yann Tiersen (France) is a musician from Britanny whose fame spread through the film Amélie and its soundtrack. Tickets for his concert in the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres are available at 30 euros.
Monday July 18
13.00: Adiós Noviembre (Spain) are natives of Cartagena and offer this concert on home territory in the Real Club de Regatas. Tickets 5 euros.
20.00: Alex Ferreira (Dominican Republic) is returning to this country after last year’s sell-out tour of Mexico and Spain to present his new album, “En lo que llega la primavera”. His free concert is in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Eliades Ochoa (Cuba) is one of the stars of the renowned Buena Vista Social Club and has won various Grammys related to the album, which is considered one of the finest of all time of its genre and was nominated for an Oscar. His traditional Cuban ballads include Chan Chan, Dos Gardenias and Quizás, Quizás, Quizás and he performs in Cartagena in the patio of the CIM building. Tickets are priced at 15 euros.
23.00: Youssou N´Dour (Senegal), one of the superstars of African music who has been awarded the special La Mar de Músicas prize in 2022. Accompanied by the Super Étoile de Dakar he has developed “mbalax”, the most popular music of Senegal. This will be his sixth appearance at La Mar de Músicas, this time at the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres. Tickets 30 euros.
Tuesday July 19
13.00: Mala Cotton (Spain) present their fresh sounds in English and Spanish at the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena. Tickets 5 euros.
20.00: Riccie Oriach (Dominican Republic) is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who seeks to represent the rich musical diversity of his home country. This free concert takes place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Muerdo (Spain) is a project created by the Murcia poet and singer Paskual Kantero, and tickets for the concert in the patio of the CIM building are on sale at 15 euros a piece.
23.00: Carla Morrison (Mexico) is famed for songs such as Déjenme Llorar and Disfruto, the first of which won her a Grammy Latino in 2010. She has since enjoyed sell-out tours of the USA and Spain and is now presenting her new album El Renacimiento after a pause of 7 years. Tickets for the concert at the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres are available at 25 euros.
Wednesday July 20
13.00: Franvvi (Spain) is the stage name of Cartagena musician Francisco Vicente Conesa, who offers this free concert in the Real Club de Regatas.
20.00: Fiesta de la bachata with Sandro Reyes (Dominican Republic), a festival of bachata in a free concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Yasser Tejeda (Dominican Republic) is a representative of the current musical scene in his country and offers this free concert in the patio of the CIM building.
23.00: Tanxugueiras hail from Galicia in the north-west of Spain and are a dance music trio offering a free concert on the seafront in the port of Cartagena, alongside the Auditorio El Batel. They share the bill with La M.O.D.A. (La Maravillosa Orquesta del Alcohol), a band from Burgos who have taken their unique brand of music around the world over the last decade.
Thursday July 21
13.00: Maestro Espada (Spain) are from Murcia and play a curious mix of electronic folk music. Tickets for the concert in the Real Club de Regatas are on sale at just 5 euros.
20.00: Buscabulla (Dominican Republic) is an experimental pop duo formed by Raquel Berríos and Luis Alfredo Del Valle, who offer this free concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Sofiane Pamart (France) is a contemporary classical pianist with the mentality of a rapper, whose image has attracted sponsors such as Lacoste, Cartier and Polaroid. She has lent her talents to projects as modern as the popular video game Assassin's Creed Valhalla and has topped the bill at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Her concert in Cartagena is in the patio of the CIM building with tickets priced at 15 euros.
23.00: La Cabra Mecánica (Spain) published their first disc as long as 25 years ago and are celebrating the anniversary with a tour of Spain looking back on their numerous hits. Tickets for the concert at the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres are priced at 30 euros.
Friday July 22
13.00: filovento (Spain) is the creation of Kevin Magdalena Giménez, a music teacher from Murcia who uses his guitar to create a fusion of post-rock and folk music. Tickets for the concert at the Real Club de Regatas are on sale at 5 euros.
20.00: Daniel, me estás matando (Mexico) is a duo breathing new life into the Bolero genre and they offer this free concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Valeria Castro (Spain) is from the Canary Islands and has been widely acclaimed for the sensitivity of her voice and the beauty of her music. Tickets for her concert in the patio of the CIM building are priced at 15 euros.
23.00: Guitarricadelafuente is the stage name of Álvaro Lafuente, who with his guitar has generated great interest among the Spanish music press and has just brought out his debut album, La Cantera. He performs live at the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres with tickets priced at 30 euros.
Midnight: Rita Indiana (Dominican Republic) combines merengue, samba and cumbia and has become an icon in her home country. Tickets for her concert at the Castillo Árabe are on sale at 12 euros.
Saturday July 23
13.00: Spanish group Goblin Circus offer their mix of psychodelia, punk and surf music at the Real Club de Regatas. Tickets 5 euros.
20.00: The last free concert of La Mar de Músicas 2022 is given by Vera Fauna from Sevilla in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
21.30: Rosario La Tremendita is from Sevilla and has twice been nominated for the Best Flamenco Album award at the Latin Grammys. Tickets are available at 15 euros for her concert in the patio of the CIM building.
23.00: Jacob Collier (UK) is sometimes referred to as the enfant terrible of jazz, and in 2012 his home videos went viral on YouTube. He soon signed with the record company of Quincy Jones and later won two Grammys with his first album, In My Room, which he recorded at home in London (hence the title).
Tickets for his concert in the Auditorio 'Paco Martín' in Parque Torres are on sale at 35 euros.
Midnight: Letón Pé (Dominican Republic) reached stardom in 2019 with her debut single The One and is now one of the hottest names in her country’s music scene. Tickets for the final concert of the La Mar de Músicas festival of 2022 at the Castillo Árabe are on sale at 12 euros.

Where to find basic tourism information and information about historical sites and places to visit in Cartagena, Spain.
Cartagena has a wealth of historical sites, including the Roman Theatre Museum, Archaeological Museum, ARQUA Subaquatic Archaeology Museum, Panoramic lift, Civil War Air raid Shelter and Military and Naval Museums, as well as Tourist Bus and Tourist Boat which ferries visitors across to the Fuerte de Navidad.
There is one main Tourist Information Office and 2 tourist information points, the main one being in the Muralla Púnica Interpretation centre in Calle de san Diego and the other next to the Civil War Air Raid Shelter and Panoramic lift.
The office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the easiest place to pick up a map if you've come into the port from a cruise ship, and has a few basic leaflets, but not a lot else.
The information point for the Puerto de Culturas attractions is by the Panoramic lift and Civil War Air Raid shelter in Calle Gisbert, although maps and leaflets are available at any of 3 information points.
