Spain’s capital city hosts one of the most anticipated celebrations of the summer this month
One of Europe’s most cosmopolitan capitals, Madrid is a multi-faceted destination that is becoming increasingly popular with the LGBTQ+ community and one of the top picks for Pride festivals. For 2023, Madrid Gay Pride promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a stunning array of political activism, cultural events and fun activities.
While the festival traditionally begins on June 28 to coincide with International Pride Day and to commemorate the StoneWall riots, which marked the start of the movement, the Spanish capital is kicking things off a bit earlier with several activities in the vibrant Chueca neighbourhood on Friday June 23.
Across the globe, the main event of Pride is undoubtedly the LGBTQI+ Parade, a worldwide call for tolerance and equality that is held each year on the first Saturday in July. This year, the Madrid procession will depart from Atocha (Paseo del Prado, by the Botanical Garden) to Colón, a colourful march that will be awash with floats and musical entertainment.
In 2022, more than two million people participated in the main act of the festival, the demonstration, which featured a parade of more than 50 floats.
