Farmers and other professional drivers have announced hundreds of protests across Spain
Traffic jam caused by the protests in Salamanca
Since the beginning of the week, thousands of tractors have taken to the streets across Spain to demand fair treatment for the rural sector. Farmers are protesting to urge the government and EU institutions to take swift and meaningful action to address the drought situation, reduce production costs, put an end to unfair competition from third countries, and alleviate environmental obstacles imposed by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The demonstrations in Spain are part of a larger movement that has been gaining momentum across Europe, with professionals from countries like France, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Italy and Poland demanding similar concessions for their own agricultural sectors. Their demands include stricter import regulations for food from non-European countries that do not adhere to European standards.
Now, the worrying news has emerged that drivers from other transport sectors plan to join the farmers’ protests, sparking concern over the impact these mass demonstrations will have on the country’s infrastructure.
For now, the farmers have announced hundreds of protests up and down the country during the month of February. Here are the details known so far:
Tuesday February 6: The agrarian organisation Unión de Uniones de Agricultores y Ganaderos will begin the series of industrial action in the province of Burgos, demonstrating in the capital city as well as the towns of Miranda del Ebro, Briviesca, Medina de Pomar and Aranda del Duero.
Wednesday February 7: Unión de Uniones has called for a new day of protests in the León municipality of Santamaría del Páramo and in the port of Castellón.
Thursday February 8: There will be protests from the sector in Ávila, Salamanca, Ciudad Real and Huesca.

Tuesday February 13: The ranchers and farmers of La Rioja and Zaragoza will be on the roads and there are demonstrations called by Unión de Uniones in the ports of Tarragona and Santander.
Wednesday February 14: On this day, mobilisations are planned in Toledo, Guadalajara, Jaén, Seville, Palencia, Soria and in the Segovian municipality of Santa María La Real de Nieva.
Thursday February 15: There are protests called in Castellón and the Segovian municipality of Boceguillas.
