Eric Forrest, 55, has been issued with a lifetime ban from flying with Jet2 after his drunken antics forced a flight from Glasgow to the Spanish island of Tenerife to make an emergency landing in Portugal.

A spokesperson for Jet2 accused him of "aggression, illicit consumption of alcohol, intimidation towards other customers and even children, suspected handling of illegal substances, and urinating inside the cabin”.

Portuguese police were waiting for Forrest on the tarmac when the plane touched down. It’s understood that he wasn’t arrested, but spent two days in Faro Airport before catching a Ryanair flight back to the UK.

The other passengers on the plane had to disembark and wait while the plane was cleaned, and holidaymakers waiting on the return leg of the flight back to Glasgow had to spend another night in Tenerife due to the late arrival of the aircraft.

Jet2 bosses arranged overnight accommodation and food and drinks for the stranded travellers, and are now threatening to go after Forrest for the five-figure costs it racked up.

Back at home in Beith, Ayrshire, Forrest has apologised for his behaviour, admitting that he was intoxicated but denying peeing on the plane.

“I didn’t urinate in the cabin. I poured out a bottle of vodka that I bought in duty free,” he explained.

“I agree that I was drinking that secretly. I was very much drunk. I was just drinking too much.

“They said I was endangering the aircraft, but I wasn’t. I was already drinking the vodka prior to that, but that’s why I poured it out because I couldn’t drink it.”

Responding to the claims that the airline now plans to sue him for several thousand, Forrest said:

“I’m not working, so I wouldn’t know how I’d be able to pay anything back.”

Phil Ward, Managing Director of Jet2.com, said: "The man's behaviour was absolutely disgraceful”.

He added: "As we have done before, we will now vigorously pursue the 55-year-old for all the costs that we incurred as a result of this diversion, as well as banning him for life”.
