MABS San Javier charity shop and cancer support moves into fantastic new premises
The new charity shop will stock furniture, clothes and more

MABS in San Javier have moved to bigger and better premises as of February 1. The charity shop is now based at Calle Roma 2, San Javier, 30730 under the Essential Fitness Centre, and the telephone number is +34 968 191 300.

With this larger store, MABS will be stocking more furniture such as sofas, dining tables and beds, and there will be more electrical equipment and lots of bric-a-brac, clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery and more.
MABS was formed on June 7, 1999 by five ladies from the Javea/Marina Alta area of Spain who had all experienced and beaten breast cancer. The group name, MABS, stands for Marina Alta Breast Cancer Support.
When MABS was first established there was little, if any, information available for anyone who had been diagnosed with breast cancer or the treatment they could expect to receive here in Spain, and there was absolutely no support available to foreigners who had received the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer.

In late 2017, they officially became MABS Cancer Support Fundación, a significant step up from the previous status that provided recognition that they had become a highly important support organisation in Spain. This new status allows them to have assets and made it possible to purchase a property in Camposol which was adapted into the Respite Home in Spring 2018.
“Our name may have changed over the years but our mission remains the same to care, comfort and counsel people affected by cancer.”
Although MABS is a registered charity, it does not receive any local or government funding and all the work undertaken is paid for from our shops, fundraising efforts and donations. A vast sum of money has been spent on medical equipment.
MABS can provide wheelchairs, hospital beds, ripple mattresses, walking aids, bathing equipment, toilet aids etc. And if they don’t have something that is required, they look into sourcing it for you. They can also help with Drivers and Translators for hospital appointments etc.
If you, or someone you know, has been diagnosed with cancer and in need of support, drop by the new Centre/Shop and register.
Also, if you have spare time, MABS is always grateful to have more volunteers, be they van drivers, shop volunteers, stock sorters, admin staff or patient drivers.
MABS on the Costa Cálida work in 3 areas; San Javier, Mazarrón/Totana and Calasparra.

Description
The MABS Cancer Support Group was founded in 1999 by five women (4 British and 1 Austrian), all of whom had had breast cancer. Originally named MARINA ALTA BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP, their aim was to provide support to cancer patients and their families on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. News traveled fast and the medical profession was soon referring ALL types of cancers to the Group for support, so the name was changed to MABS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP to reflect this.
They provide information on the type of cancer, treatment, side effects, where to buy wigs and prosthesis, etc. MABS provides translators for clinic and hospital appointments, as well as drivers who will collect the person from home and deliver them to the place of treatment, wait for them, and take them home again.
MABS receives no financial assistance from local or regional governments and relies on fundraising and donations from local organisations.
The Group now has branches with co-ordinators in Jávea, Gran Alacant, Torrevieja , Murcia/Mar Menor, Mazarrón, North-west Murcia, Mojacar and Marbella, but there are supporters in most towns.
MABS Cancer Support Group is a registered charity and is funded from the community in Spain . We are non profit making and all monies raised remain here in Spain, helping the people who need it most. All accounts are audited annually by our President, Mrs Jacquelyne Phillips MBE.
People diagnosed with cancer anywhere in the world face many challenges that may leave them feeling overwhelmed, afraid and alone. If diagnosis or treatment takes place in another country this is an added difficulty to cope with, e.g. not being native can cause added stresses and this is why MABS are working to ease these problems.
As their motto says – help is just a phone call away
