Malaga will introduce Low Emission Zones by March
By the end of the first quarter of 2024, the Costa del Sol capital will have established its new zones
Malaga is deep in the planning stages of its new Low Emission Zone (ZBE) which will be up and running by the end of the first quarter of 2024. However, the regional government is giving drivers plenty of time to adapt to the changes and in the beginning, vehicle access won’t be restricted at all in the city centre.
Going forward, all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants – 149 cities and large towns – will have to limit access to older and more polluting cars in their urban centres. The system is well up and running in the likes of Madrid and Barcelona, but the vast majority of regions are still working the details out.
This is the stage Malaga is at. The traffic authorities have delineated 437 hectares as Low Emission city centre streets but the first 12 months will be considered a “landing” year as drivers get used to the restrictions. In this way, there will be no limitations on circulation, so vehicles will be able to travel anywhere they like, regardless of their environmental label.
Limitations for B-rated cars
There is one very important restriction that will come into play as soon as the ZBE is deployed, will be at the end of March at the latest, and this effects the most polluting vehicles – those with a ‘B’ environmental label and cars with no label at all.
Any B label or no-label vehicles registered in Malaga after the Low Emission Zone comes into force will be banned from the city centre outright. However, if the car is bought before the ZBE is established and it’s domiciled in Malaga, it will be allowed to circulate just like all other vehicles.
Restrictions in Malaga from 2025
After the 12-month settling-in period, Malaga City Council will begin applying proper restrictions on polluting vehicles from the spring of 2025.
In the case of cars and motorcycles, only vehicles with a ‘Zero’, ‘ECO’, ‘C’ and ‘B’ label will be able to enter the ZBE. For vehicles not entitled to an environmental sticker, only those officially registered in Malaga will be allowed.
Starting in the third year, 2026, the obligation for the car or motorcycle to be domiciled in the capital will be extended to label B.
The Councillor for Mobility has clarified that drivers will not be required to buy an environmental sticker to place on their vehicle, since cameras will be installed to read licence plates.
Fines
If a vehicle with restricted access enters the Malaga ZBE, it will be considered a serious infraction and will entail a fine of 200 euros.
What streets does the ZBE cover?
The delimitation of the ZBE in Malaga is made up of the following streets:
Paseo Marítimo Antonio Machado, Ingeniero José María Garnica avenue, Calle Explanada de la Estación, Plaza de la Solidaridad, Avenida de las Américas, Avenida de la Aurora, Picasso Gardens, Avenida de Andalucía, Calle Compositor Lehmberg Ruiz, Calle Hilera, Calle Santa Elena, Calle Honduras, Calle Arango, Calle Martínez Maldonado, Avenida de Barcelona, Plaza del Civil Hospital, Doctor Gálvez Ginachero avenue, Calle Mazarredo, Arroyo de los Ángeles avenue, Paseo de Martiricos, Calle Huerto de los Claveles, Calle Marqués de Cádiz, Calle Juan del Encina, Calle Empecinado, Plaza Capuchinos, Alameda de Capuchinos, Plaza Olletas, Calle Toquero, Calle Obispo González García, Calle Amargura, Calle Ferrándiz, Paseo Salvador Rueda, Calle Rafael Pérez Estrada and Paseo Marítimo Pablo Ruiz Picasso.
