The Poet's Path route charts the life and work of late Orihuela poet Miguel Hernández
Following a three-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, La Senda del Poeta makes a welcome return next month.
The walking tour charts the life and work of Spanish poet Miguel Hernández, and departs from Orihuela where he was born, to Alicante where he is buried.
The last of the popular walks was held in 2019, with 'in-person' routes suspended because of the health crisis...until now.
A special presentation was held to announce the 27th La Senda del Poeta at the Centro Hernandiano, attended by the director of the Valencian Institute of Youth, Jesús Martí, and representatives from the municipalities the walk passes through.
"From March 24 to 26, walkers will once again cover the 68 kilometres that make up this route, which combines culture, tourism, the environment, historical memory and intergenerational coexistence," he said, adding that around 2,000 people including youth groups are expected to take part.
And this year, there will be two 'guest hikers of the year'. Firstly a member of the Orihuela Cultural Association which is dedicated to recognising the life and work of the poet, and secondly, Francisco Esteve, one of the main promoters of the path since its creation in 1998. He is also the honorary president of the Association of Friends of Miguel Hernández.
Poet's Path will begin in Orihuela, as usual, with a poetry recital by students from different public schools in the municipality.
The tour will wind through the municipalities of Redován, Callosa de Segura, Cox, Granja de Rocamora, Albatera, San Isidro, Crevillent, Elche, El Rebolledo, and will end in the Alicante cemetery, in front of the tomb of Miguel Hernández.
Along the route there will be recitals of the poet's works, meals, musical performances and receptions for the hikers.
Walkers will also receive free podiatry and physiotherapy care from the students of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, as they pass through the town.
The initiative has been consolidated as a tour of a cultural, tourist and environmental nature, to disseminate the work and life of the poet Miguel Hernandez, which this year coincides with the 80th anniversary of the poet’s death on March 28, 1942.
