Markets and shopping in Molina de Segura
The Saturday morning market in Molina is one of the largest in the Region of Murcia
As is to be expected in a municipality with over 70,000 inhabitants (making it the fourth most populated in the Region of Murcia), Molina de Segura offers practically everything the discerning shopper could require.
In fact, even in terms of large malls it is better placed than most towns, as the two largest in the city of Murcia, Nueva Condomina and Thader, are no more than five minutes’ drive away from Molina down the A-30 motorway (or the old road from the residential developments of Altorreal and La Alcayna).
In the town centre of Molina there is also another shopping centre, on a rather more modest scale: the Vega Plaza is situated at the north-western corner of the central Parque de la Compañía, and includes 12 clothes stores , half a dozen other shops, several bar restaurants and an ice-cream parlour.
Elsewhere in the town centre, particularly along the Paseo Rosales, the Calle Mayor, the Avenida de Madrid and the surrounding streets, Molina offers almost every kind of shop and service imaginable, and window shoppers will have their work cut out to see the town in a day!
The Paseo Rosales is particularly popular, with a number of cafeterías offering open-air street seating, the paseo generally busy at any time of the day.
But perhaps the most attractive shopping experience in Molina de Segura is the weekly market which is held on Saturday mornings in the Parque de la Compañía, the large park at the heart of the town. All over the Region of Murcia there are markets held in small- and medium-sized towns, offering chances to pick up some fresh fruit and veg, a few plants or some items of clothing, but this, like the main markets of Murcia and Cartagena, is shopping on a very different scale.
Among the 400-plus stalls are numerous food outlets and others selling everything from leather jackets to furniture, hand-sewn baby clothes and cot linen. In among them, of course, there is no shortage of stalls offering sustenance to the weekend shoppers!
This type of market is always very popular with visitors, as there are many bargains lurking amongst the colourful stalls and prices are generally very competitive.
