ARCHIVED - May 5 to 7 Cruces de Mayo, the May Crosses festivities in Cartagena
La Macarena, lots more live music and 32 outdoor bars in the centre of Cartagena over the weekend
This weekend the municipality of Cartagena joins many others across the country celebrating the Crosses of May, a sociable occasion in which crosses are set up in the streets, decorated with flowers and other items of local significance. The crosses become the focal point for music, merriment and celebration as part of an event which has a mix of pagan and religious roots but is also a popular cultural event.
In the city of Cartagena the event is so large that 32 outdoor bar-terraces have been set up, and although noise levels are restricted on Saturday May 6 they will be open from midday until 1.30 in the morning. The majority of these bars are in and around the historic city centre, and 20 chemical toilets are being set up by the Town Hall in the la Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Plaza San Francisco, Plaza Juan XXIII, Plaza del Rey, Cuesta de la Baronesa, Plaza de la Merced and close to the May Crosses of the California, Marraja and Resucitado brotherhoods (three of those who take part in the Semana Santa processions every year).
There is plenty of music scheduled for the weekend, one of the highlights being a free concert by Raya Real in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on Friday May 5 at 20.30. On Saturday the same stage welcomes Los del Río (yes, the group responsible for the Macarena!!) at 19.30, while other performances are scheduled in Plaza San Francisco, Plaza del Icue, Plaza Juan XXIII, Plaza del Rey, Los Juncos and La Cuesta de la Baronesa.

Members regularly return to their extended family at the La Quinta multi-ownership club within La Manga Club
Continuity, security and the constant drive to improve attract visitors back to La Quinta year after year
The 5-star La Quinta in the heart of La Manga Club, the most prestigious sports resort development in the Costa Cálida, has forged a reputation over more than three decades as one of the finest multi-ownership members clubs in Europe, and is currently able to offer a limited number of new membership deals on both permanent and fixed 4-year term conditions.
Located in lush tropical gardens above the par-47 pitch and putt course of La Manga Club, La Quinta is within easy walking distance of the tennis centre and various shopping malls. The properties are luxury air-conditioned linked villas built in the traditional Andalusian style with views out across La Manga Club towards the Mar Menor, and those occupying them can enjoy the community’s saltwater swimming pool with swim-up pool bar, where drinks and snacks are served throughout the day.
La Quinta is also home to La Solana bar and restaurant, which is open to non-members for the superb breakfast and lunch menus!
In short, to remain at the top in a resort which has on various occasions been named the best golf destination in Europe, La Quinta have worked hard to combine a number of factors in what has proved to be a winning formula, the most appreciated according to members’ opinions being the following:
* Quinta Members return for their holidays
* Staff and Members are part of an extended family.
* Safety and security are given top priority.
* The weather is usually predictable and invariably better than at home!
* The standards both at La Quinta and throughout La Manga Club remain high.
* La Quinta always looks forward and tries to provide added interest every year!
