Menú del Día at Antipodas in La Azohía; a meal with a view
Fabulous views, spacious seating and a nice quality lunchtime meal
Located right at the eastern end of the bay of Mazarrón, the Antípodas restaurant is an interesting option for Menu del Día enthusiasts, at least partly on account of the almost unrivalled views out over the Mediterranean towards the villages of La Azohía and Isla Plana, Puerto de Mazarrón and the coastline beyond.
The restaurant is located at the end of the road which runs through La Azohía on the headland of Cabo Tiñoso, below the 16th-century Santa Elena watchtower and above the small fishing harbour, nowadays shared with pleasure craft and the boats belonging to local diving centres.
Such a picturesque setting makes Antípodas a popular choice for a meal out, and unsurprisingly the lunchtime Menú del Día is a regularly selected option throughout the year.
With an ample outdoor terrace and plenty of space between tables diners are able to enjoy their food while taking in the lovely views and relaxing in the warm Costa Cálida sun: people taking visitors to this spot hardly need to explain to them why they chose to live in the Costa Cálida!
The 18-euro menu is not the cheapest in the area (although neither is it the most expensive!), but with a salad then a starter, a main course and dessert all included, few can complain about value for money as they enjoy one of the most privileged locations on the coastline of the Region of Murcia.
There are of course, many places serving considerably cheaper lunchtime menus, but if you're only interested in cheap, then don´t choose Antipodus; if you enjoy a quality product, in a nice setting, an uncrowded ambience and amazing views, then it has to come pretty high up on the list of possibles.
The menu is a varied one, although naturally there is wide variety of fish and seafood options alongside the meat and vegetarian dishes and this is one of few restaurants serving this type of menu which include locally caught and ecologically friendly fish dishes amongst the offering. Typical favourites include the sea bream and bass as well as “chopitos” (baby squid), mussels and other seafood dishes, while all main courses are served with accompanying vegetables and potatoes or chips. Drinks are not included in the price of the menu.
As is the case throughout the Costa Cálida, during July and August the demand for tables is at a premium and prior booking is an absolute must, but the year-round attractiveness of the venue means that at Antípodas the same can be true even in the middle of the short Murcia winter. Should your meal coincide with one of the rare days on which the Costa Cálida weather is not behaving there is also a spacious and nicely-decorated indoor dining area, with the large windows guaranteeing that the view over the bay of Mazarrón does not disappear when the door closes!
