ARCHIVED - Mostly dry and bright week ahead: Spain weather forecast Jan 9-12
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Temperatures will remain mild in the south of Spain with showers forecast mid-week
The heavy rains that doused most of Spain over the weekend thankfully have their days numbered and while there could still be some scattered showers in the westernmost part of the country mid-week, the rain will generally be scarce in the coming days.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), a big change in the weather is expected from Monday January 9 with only occasional showers forecast in most areas with the exception of Cantabria and the extreme south. The entire country and the Islands will be largely overcast on Monday but the Mediterranean area can enjoy a few more sunny spells.
Day and nighttime temperatures will rise slightly compared to the weekend in the majority of Spain (dips expected in the extreme north) and it will be noticeably warmer along the coast, with highs of 23ºC forecast in Alicante.
Several regions, including Valencia and Andalucia, are on alert for adverse sea conditions on Monday.
All of Spain can look forward to pleasant weather on Tuesday January 10 as the anticyclone continues, with slightly cloudy or clear skies. The exception will again be the northwest, which will be mostly overcast with scattered rain in Galicia.
The arrival of an Atlantic front towards the evening could extend the showers to western Asturias, the northwest of Castilla y Leon and central Spain.
The mercury will take a noticeable dip in the Balearic Islands and along the coast of Valencia and Murcia, but temperatures will rise during the day in eastern Andalucia and in a large part of northern Spain.
Following some possible overnight drizzle Wednesday January 11 is set to dawn mostly dry and bright, with a particularly clear and sunny day in the Mediterranean, where the temperatures will rise to the low 20s once more.
However, the passing front could result in occasional scattered showers in the north and in western Andalucia.
The rain will return to Aragon, La Rioja and Castilla y Leon on Thursday January 12 and the arrival of several new Atlantic fronts will result in a cloudy, wet day in the north and central Spain.
Elsewhere, an anticyclone will bring mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies although the nighttime temperatures will dip across the board.
Looking ahead to the next weekend and at the moment, Aemet is predicting more showers and occasional heavy rain in the northern half of Spain, while dry, stable weather will likely predominate in the south and in the Canary and Balearic Islands.
