ARCHIVED - Murcia becomes first region in Spain to perform mammograms from the age of 45
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
From next year, women aged between 45 and 74 will be called for breast cancer screenings in the Region of Murcia
Beginning next year, the Region of Murcia will extend the age of women who can have a mammogram to detect breast cancer. In a Spanish first, the regional Association Against Cancer (AECC) will offer the life-saving screening to people aged between 45 and 74, significantly increasing the age range from the current 50-69 years.
The announcement was made during Breast Cancer Awareness month, which runs throughout October, and the tests will soon reach 33% of the women of the Region of Murcia, around 280,000 people in all.
The funds for this “very important measure” have already been included in 2023’s budget, according to regional president Fernando López Miras on a visit to the local AECC headquarters on Tuesday October 18.
With this, Murcia will also become the first Spanish community to follow the current European Union guidelines to screen a higher age range, thus reaching a greater percentage of the population and improving the early detection of breast cancer.
Ahead of the celebration of World Day for the Fight against Breast Cancer on October 19, López Miras met with a dozen survivors of the disease and praised the work of the organisation and the regional government, which is based on four vital pillars to fight breast cancer: prevention through healthy habits, early detection, treatment and research.
“Early detection is one of the most important issues to reduce patient mortality,” he stressed, adding that around 100,000 more women will be able to avail themselves of the service from next year.
Breast cancer cases have increased by more than a hundred annually in the last six years in the Region, but this is partly due to more vigorous awareness and screening campaigns. Figures from the AECC show that breast cancer is the second most frequent form of the disease in Murcia, after colon cancer, with 980 new cases diagnosed last year.
However, the Region is also among the communities with the lowest incidence and mortality of breast cancer, thanks to its commitment to prevention, research and treatment of the disease.
