Murcia could reach 46 degrees this week: Weather forecast July 10-16
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Another heatwave will bring unbelievable temperatures, and it will not be cooler than 20ºC for one single night this week
Take extra special care this week as a brain-melting heatwave pushes across the whole of Spain, bringing torrid temperatures as high as 46ºC/115ºF to parts of the Region of Murcia.
The heatwave will be particularly severe at the beginning of this week, and maximum temperatures during the day on Tuesday will be a full 10 degrees higher than they were on the same day last week. Minimum temperatures at night will not drop below 20ºC in any part of the Region.
For the entire week, there is nothing forecast but blazing sunshine and the occasional scattered period of high clouds passing by, with “weak, variable winds” that will be “more intense on the coast,” according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
On Monday July 10 this Region will be on yellow alert for heat, with the exception of Mazarrón and Cartagena, while on Tuesday this will be upgraded to an orange alert, with Mazarrón and Cartagena on yellow alert. For Wednesday 12, an orange weather warning has been issued for the entire Region.
Murcia weather warnings, Wednesday July 12
In fact, Wednesday will be the hottest day of the week, when the towns of Totana and Alhama de Murcia are forecast to register temperatures of 45ºC and Lorca will have incredible highs of 46ºC, and there will be a mass of Saharan dust moving through the air, affecting air quality.
While these extreme temperatures will drop slightly on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 and it will not be above 40ºC, it will still be very hot indeed and the temperatures will go back up again on Saturday 15.
These extremely high temperatures are not easy to deal with, and have been known to cause dehydration, heatstroke and death in previous summers. People are warned in no uncertain terms to stay inside where it is cooler during the hottest part of the day, normally from about 2pm-6pm, and keep their homes well ventilated.
It is also worth noting that the phenomenon known as ‘heat islands’ have turned cities across Spain – including Murcia capital and Cartagena in the Region of Murcia – into hotter places to be than in rural, country areas.
The urban heat island effect is due to buildings and roads absorbing and storing the sun’s heat, meaning nights in the city are warmer than they are in areas surrounded by natural landscapes such as forests and lakes.
