ARCHIVED - Murcia is the safest region in Spain says regional president: Covid update May 17
Murcian president says that the fourth wave has failed to materialise
Even though borders with neighbouring regions are now open and coastal areas were certainly packed and busy at the weekend with daytrippers and holidaymakers enjoying the high temperatures along the coast, the level of covid hospitalisations remains stubbornly steady across the region and new cases are detected daily, albeit to a much lesser degree than earlier in the year.
The data reported on Monday May 17 relates to the number of new cases detected on Sunday May 16 and this Sunday just 21 new cases were diagnosed, in spite of a small climb in the number of new cases detected in the preceding days. These latest diagnoses bring the total number of cases active in the region to 647.
Ten of the new cases correspond to the municipality of Cartagena, 4 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 3 to Murcia, 1 to Águilas, 1 to Campos del Río, 1 to Lorca, 1 to Molina de Segura.
At a press conference following the Covid Monitoring Committee meeting, regional president, Fernando López Miras stated that the incidence rate of Covid-19 in the Region continues to decline and has decreased by ten per cent in the last week, the third week of consecutive falls.
"There has been no fourth wave," he said, remarking that these figures mean, “we are the safest autonomous community in Spain ”.
The accumulated incidence rate remains low and as of Monday is now just 30 cases per 100,000 over seven days and 63 cases per 100,000 over 14 days, so is slowly falling.
This places Murcia amongst the lowest rates of infection in Spain, second only to the neighbouring Valencia region.
No deaths were reported on Sunday, the third consecutive day without fatalities and the total to date remains at 1,597 deaths, just over 1 per cent of the total population of Murcia, since the pandemic began.
The number of patients admitted with coronavirus to Murcian hospitals fell slightly on Sunday by two people, after having risen by nine on Saturday. This takes the total back down to 74 again, with 29 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the same figure as on Saturday. Hospitalisations have remained stubbornly around this same level for the last month and although the number of new cases goes up and down depending on the day of the week, this level of hospitalisations remains constant.
The president stressed today that "the vaccination campaign is progressing at a good pace in the Region of Murcia" stating that more than 30 percent of residents have been given their first dose.
Coverage amongst those aged over 80 is one hundred percent; the level is 92 per cent for those between 70 and 79 years; and in the age group between 60 and 69, over 77 per cent of first vaccinations have been administered.
100,000 people have been called for their vaccines this week.
"We want to vaccinate faster, and to more age groups but for that we need more vaccines", he complained.
There are 92,000 vaccines in the region's freezers, of which almost 62,000 are Astrazeneca, "which we cannot administer as long as the Ministry does not give its authorization." "In other words, almost 70 percent of the vaccines that we have in storage can only be given to the population aged between 60 and 69 years old," he remarked, which already has 77 per cent coverage.
Neighbouring Andalucía has threatened to start administering second AstraZeneca doses to its essential workers next week, regardless of whether the national government gives its authorisation or not. It is hoped that the health minister will confirm this week whether the second dose of AstraZeneca can be administered or not, following concerns about the development of blood clots in rare cases, particularly amongst younger people, who were widely vaccinated with the first dose before the problem became apparent.
