The 18 kilometre walking and cycling path will also connect Murcia with the nearby town of Alcantarilla
Murcia City Council has unveiled plans to create a Greenway walking and biking path that will stretch across several southern districts, connecting them to each other and to key points throughout the city.
With a budget of more than 1.5 million euros, the Southern Cordillera Greenway will connect the districts of the South Mountain Range with the Carmen station near the Segura River, continuing its route through the centre of the city and reaching La Purísima-Barriomar and Nonduermas.
Overall, this route of the Murcia Greenway will be 18 kilometres long and will ultimately link Murcia with the nearby town of Alcantarilla.
The second stage of the path includes the districts of Zeneta and Nonduermas, linking with the future Conexión Sur boulevard and with the Riacho de la Morda Green Path, and will include new pedestrian and cycle paths, gardens and green areas.
Second phase of the Greenway
Construction of a 1,540 m 2 garden under the Tiñosa bridge (Los Dolores)
A 1,540 square metre garden will be planted under the Tiñosa bridge in Los Dolores, complete with trees, a children’s play area and parking spots for 8 vehicles.
Community hub at Beniaján Station
Where the old Beniaján station stands, a 3,000-square-metre natural oasis will be built that will become a meeting place for the residents of the district and will host recreational, cultural and sports activities.
Performances in San José de la Vega, Torreagüera and Los Ramos
In San José de la Vega, pedestrian and cyclist traffic will join the Los Pinos road and Calle Mayor, improving the accessibility of the district and the safety of the neighbours.
The historic Torreagüera will be used for sporting and cultural events, and the new walkway will stretch through the district of Los Ramos.
New trails will connect the Greenway with Alquerías and Zeneta
The second phase involves the creation of new green trails that connect the route of the Greenway with the districts of Zeneta and Alquerías.
The two new roads will run from Los Ramos to Zeneta - a length of about 800 metres - and from Los Ramos to Alquerías - 1 kilometre.
Planting trees and improving security
In all, more than 5,000 native shrubs will be planted along the Greenway, and the entire path will be lit so that walkers and cyclists can use it at night.
