ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid Update July 22: Hospitals under increasing pressure as infections soar
ARCHIVED ARTICLE Almost 600 new coronavirus cases were recorded on Wednesday in the Region of Murcia
Covid refuses to loosen its grip on Spain and the fifth wave is leading to soaring rates of infections in the Region of Murcia, the likes of which haven’t been experienced since February.
The latest data from the Ministry of Health shows that 589 new infections were recorded on Wednesday, July 21, which is
a significant 118 more than the previous 24 hour period. This brings the total number of infections in the Region of Murcia since the pandemic began to 120,740.
Of the new positive cases, 185 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 119 to
Cartagena, 32 to Molina de Segura, 17 to La Unión, 16 to Lorca and 16 to Mazarrón. The remaining cases are spread out across the remaining municipalities.
The number of active infections has jumped from 3,835 to 4309, that’s an increase of 474 people in just 24 hours.
Unfortunately, the bad news continues as the increase in infections naturally has a knock-on effect on the hospitals, and
the pressure on health care personnel has risen sharply. There were 15 new admissions on Wednesday, bring the total number of patients up to 82. There are now 12 people in the ICU, two more than the previous day.
The incidence rate amongst younger people, specifically in the 15 to 29 age group, continues to be the highest in the Region of Murcia, with a total of 951 infections reported in the last week alone, which represents a staggering 56.3 per cent of all cases.
The Health Minister, Juan José Pedreño, revealed at a press conference this morning (July 22) that the patients being admitted to the ICU are all very young also, and that none bar the oldest patient has received a vaccine.
Yesterday, a total of 5,469 PCR and antigen tests were carried out, of which 10.7 per cent were positive, a two point increase on the day before.
Thankfully, no new deaths have been recorded since
a 29-year-old man lost his life on Monday, the youngest Covid-related fatality since the pandemic began. To date, 1,610 people have died from Covid so far in Murcia, while 115,295 have overcome the virus.
