The city of Murcia hosts 13 concerts, talks and screenings in a musical season for all the family

Jazz returns to the city of Murcia this year with a brand new edition of the Murcia Jazz Festival, which runs from March 3 to 27 in municipal theatres and auditoriums, in additional to open air spaces and squares. Thirteen concerts have been scheduled which will feature performances by international stars such the Benavent-di Geraldo-Pardo trio, who will open the festival.

Also booked to appear at the celebrations are Chano Domínguez, with his successful combination of jazz and flamenco, the American saxophonist Jesse Davis, and Michael Olivera & The Cuban Jazz Syndicate.

Of course, the jazz festival also supports several talented local artists such as the Roberto Gimeno Quartet, the LCD Funk Collective and the Andrés Santos Station Band.

According to the Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex, “Murcia is establishing itself as a regional benchmark for cultural events and this festival is added to the extensive agenda available and close to everyone.”

Concerts at the Teatro Circo Murcia (TCM)

March 3: The festival kicks off with a concert featuring Carles Benavent, Tino di Geraldo and Jorge Pardo, celebrating their 20 years on stage at the TCM
March 10-16: The TCM will once again be the main stage of the Murcia Jazz Festival with the celebration of a total of six concerts. In addition to the Benavent-di Geraldo-Pardo trio, Jesse Davis, saxophonist from New Orleans brings his unique blues tunes and Michael Olivera & The Cuban Jazz Syndicate will also make an appearance
March 17: Pepe Rivero, led by Cuban drummer Michel Olivera, will showcase his new album, ‘Y llegó la luz’, in a unique musical journey that will take listeners all around the world
March 20: The TCM will also host a fun family concert, ‘Jazz for Children’ which will enchant youngsters with musical compositions from hit movies like Aladdin and Frozen
March 25: The Andrés Santos Station Band will provide live music for the screening of the film ‘El maquinista de La General’ by Buster Keaton
March 26: Chano Domínguez, one of the most famous pianists and composers, will take to the TCM stage, fusing flamenco rhythms with jazz.

Concerts at other venues

March 4: Joan Saldaña & Pepe Zaragoza Quintet, a group that includes the Murcian pianist Carlos Sáez, will perform at the Guadalupe Auditorium
March 5: The Bernal Theater in El Palmar will also once again form part of the Murcia Jazz Festival and will host Ramon Cardo & Clara Juan Quintet, two saxophonists offering a combination of hard bop and original compositions.
March 11: ‘Lfunk’, a new project by the Murcian funk-rock group headed by Coco Carmona, will grace the stage of the Beniajan Auditorium
March 13: Portugal-based Murcian double bassist Pedro Molina will return to his home town to perform at La Alberca Auditorium
March 18: Daahoud Salim Quintet, a group created in Amsterdam in 2016, of which the Murcian trombonist Pablo Martínez is a member, will perform at the Algezares Auditorium
March 20: Another group from Murcia, the Roberto Gimeno Quartet, will arrive at the Cabezo de Torres Auditorium on March 20 to present their first album, ‘Horizonte’.

Additional activities

March 9: The Jazzazza Jazz Club of Algezares will organize a talk with the producer Jordi Suñol on March 9 under the title ‘Jazz seen from within. More than 50 years between music and musicians’
March 24: A new audiovisual talk with cultural programmer Mario Benso: ‘Tradition in transition. The Evolution of Jazz’
March 23: The documentary ‘Let’s Get Lost’ (1988) will be screened at the Region’s Film Library.

Attendance at these three events is free until capacity is reached.

The Murcia Jazz Festival ends on Sunday March 27 with a free double morning concert in the Plaza de la Universidad de Murcia. The Parisian saxophonist Olivier Franc will present a tribute program to the great Sidney Bechet, a key musician in the history of jazz; and the group O Sister! will transport the public to the new ’20s with their new album, ‘Nobody Cares’.
