Three men have been arrested and remanded in prison following the violent attack in the Region of Murcia
A Murcia man who was brutally beaten and robbed by three assailants is in a coma two weeks after the horrific attack which left him for dead in the street.
The victim was set upon as he headed for home after leaving a Murcia nightclub during the early hours of July 8. When he didn't return, relatives contacted the police reporting that "it was not like him" to stay out without letting somebody know.
Before a missing person's report could be filed the young man was found badly beaten and unconscious in the street, showing "obvious sign of a brutal assault", according to the National Police.
The bloodied victim was rushed to hospital for "urgent medical assistance" and an investigation was launched.
Given that the victim, whose age and identity have not been made public, was unconscious and unable to speak, detectives appealed for witnesses and reviewed security cameras in the area.
"By doing this detectives were able to reconstruct the victim's last hours. In the security camera images recovered, he could be seen walking along the street before being approached by three men who stopped him, restrained him, brutally assaulted him and stole his belongings, specifically his wallet and phone, leaving him lying on the pavement," said police in a statement.
"After analysing the CCTV images and other evidence, the specialist investigators were able to fully identify the three men aged between 26 and 35 who were arrested a few days after the violent attack and robbery," they added.
Following their arrests, a search warrant was issued and officers discovered clothes that matched the CCTV images of the suspects at their homes.
As the victim is still unable to give a statement, it's not known whether he and the alleged attackers are known to each other.
The three men appeared before Murcia Duty Court charged with robbery and attempted murder and have been remanded in prison.
