ARCHIVED - Murcia region Covid update Friday July 16
Although the 14-day rate has risen to 244 cases per 100,000, the Murcia region still has the second lowest rate in mainland Spain
There is no hiding from the fact that Spain is currently immersed in a fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic as the number of new cases being reported on a daily basis has continued its meteoric rise this last week, propelled upwards by the relaxation in restrictions permitting night-life venues to re-open, relaxing the rules governing the wearing of masks and the multiple outbreaks caused by young people enjoying the end of the academic year. This has been exacerbated by the start of the holiday season, with lockdown-weary city dwellers desperate to escape to holiday apartments by the coast, in spite of the fact that millions of Spaniards remain unvaccinated, particularly the younger age groups who are those most actively spreading the virus amongst the population.
It’s unfortunately a toxic cocktail of circumstances which is inevitably leading to a big increase in the number of new cases being diagnosed all over Spain, and the only crumb of comfort we can draw here in Murcia is that our case levels here are the second lowest in the country, even though the latest figures reported today are actually almost five times higher than they were a little over a month ago.
Murcia is “only” reporting 244 cases per 100,000 of population over the latest 14¬-day period, compared to Cataluña, which has 1,107 cases per 100,000 or Castilla y León which has 825, Madrid with 339 or Andalucía with 333.
The Region of Murcia has reported 439 new positive cases for Covid-19 in the last 24 hour period, the total number of those affected by Covid-19 in the Region of Murcia since the beginning of the pandemic rising to 118,352.
Of the 439 new cases, 133 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 68 to Cartagena, 28 to Molina de Segura, 22 to Torre Pacheco, 17 to Alcantarilla, 17 to La Unión, 14 to Lorca, 14 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 10 to Jumilla, 10 to Yecla, 7 to Archena, 7 to San Javier, 6 to Bullas, 6 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 6 to Cieza, 5 to Abarán, 5 to Fortuna, 5 to Mazarrón, 4 to Águilas, 4 to Los Alcázares , 4 to Fuente Álamo, 4 to Librilla, 4 to Totana. The remainder are distributed amongst the other municipalities in smaller quantities.
This means that the total number of active cases now stands at 2,730 in the Region of Murcia (263 more than the previous day), of which 40 are admitted to hospitals (one more) with eleven in intensive care (one less).
This is unfortunately, 26 per cent higher than at the beginning of the week and the number in ICU is 29 per cent higher, so there is no hiding from the fact that this figure is going up.
The remainder, 2,690 patients who have given a positive test, remain in home isolation, an increase of 262 within the latest 24-hour period.
The active cases also take into consideration that 175 people were given the all-clear within the latest 24-hour period, taking the total number of those who have tested positive and later been given the all-clear to 114,013.
Sadly, one fatality has been reported overnight, the first for eleven days, and the regional health authorities have reminded the public how important it is to get vaccinated by highlighting that the deceased, a 48-year-old woman from area III, had not been vaccinated even though her age group had been offered a vaccine.
None of the other occupants of intensive care at the moment, aged 20-55, has been vaccinated, in seven cases, through choice.
This latest fatality brings the total in the region to date to 1,609.
