ARCHIVED - New Murcia business law will remove environmental protection requirements for private companies
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The government has come under fire for scrapping red tape for new businesses, bypassing the need to meet environmental criteria
The Regional Assembly in Murcia has validated in its plenary session this morning, Wednesday November 9, the third Law of Administrative Simplification of the Region. This latest law is controversial, just like the two previous ones, because it basically “dismantles” environmental controls for companies, as environmental and opposition groups allege.
According to Murcia’s Regional Minister of Enterprise, Employment, Universities, María del Valle Miguélez, the current economic situation “obliges” them to take measures to try and make the Murcia Region a more attractive investment destination for businesses, which presumably includes allowing them carte blanche to pollute the local environment.
“This Government is committed to the Region of Murcia and takes courageous decisions”, she said.
Specifically, the new law aims to remove red tape and make it simpler to issue reports to allow companies to be processed in a period of three months. The main criticism of the law is that it will not give enough time to respect the due process of making sure the proposed business being set up complies with environmental regulations.
On behalf of the opposition parliamentary groups, the PSOE deputy, Alfonso Martínez Baños, pointed out that the approval of this third Simplification Law is the “confirmation of the failure of the two previous ones”.
He warned that this law is “sponsored and sponsored with the Croem (Murcia business association), without taking into account the unions” and that these laws “have the same common thread, the lack of protection for the environment. They have learned nothing from what is happening in the Mar Menor.”
Other opposition members said variously that this decree “instead of simplifying, complicates and is creating legal uncertainty” and that administrative simplification cannot come “at the expense of environmental protection” or fly in the face of European directives or national legislation.
