The 4.5-km event is the first in a season of Lorca runs which lasts until next October

November 10 Running race up to the castle of Lorca The 23rd annual season of fun runs and cross-country races in Lorca begins on November 10 with the 46^th “Cross Patrón de Lorca-Subida” event, in which competitors make their way up the hill to the imposing Fortaleza del Sol, the medieval castle which stands above the city.

This event coincides with the annual fiestas in honour of San Clemente and a slight change in the schedule this year sees it moved from the Saturday afternoon to the Sunday morning, but in other respects the tradition is fully maintained. The course of 4,500 metres begins in the Plaza de Calderón and after a circuit on Avenida Juan Carlos I and Calle Jerónimo Santa Fe the climb up to the castle follows Calle Nogalte, Calle Selgas, Plaza de España, Calle Barandillas, Calle Mayor de Santa María and Calle de Los Pilones to the entrance of the castle.

All race categories cover the same distance, from under-16s to over-70s, and registration is open online here until midnight on November 7 at a cost of just 3 euros. Race numbers are to be collected on the day of the event at 9.30 in Plaza de Calderón, an hour before the start time of 10.30.

The remaining events in the season are the following:

The San Silvestre race on New Year’s Eve,
The San José race in March,
CorrexLorca on May 11,
The Fiestas de la Viña fun run on June 22,
The Campillo run in August, and
The race featured in the 2025 Juegos Deportivos del Guadalentín on October 5 2024.

Those completing at least 5 of the races are eligible to compete for the overall season prizes, as long as two of the five are the CorrexLorca and the event during the Juegos Deportivos del Guadalentín.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Lorca Tourist Office Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

Lorca Tourist Office The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Lorca Tourist Office Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a Lorca Tourist Office series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.
