ARCHIVED - November 19 Free guided tour of the Huerta countryside around Molina de Segura
Learn about traditional fruit and vegetable growing in the fertile soil of the Segura flood plain
The “huerta” of central and eastern Murcia is the fertile land in the flood plain of the River Segura which has led to the agricultural wealth and diversity of the area over centuries – millennia, in fact – and it is still central to the economy of the Region as a whole.
It is still true to say that much of the huerta is divided into individual smallholdings or “huertos”, some not much bigger than allotments, where a variety of crops are grown and irrigation is still in part achieved by the network of “acequia” ditches created by the Moors in medieval times.
On November 19 the tourist office of Molina de Segura is organizing a free tour under the title of “Del Campo a la Huerta” in which members of the public can learn more about the traditional crop-growing techniques in this part of Spain. An ideal opportunity for those struggling to get plants to grow in the heat of the Costa Cálida to take on board a few tips from those who know how to get the best results!
Those taking part will travel by coach to the La Albarda centre, which highlights traditions of the local countryside of Molina and preserves old customs, beliefs and the reliance on nature which constitutes a large part of the heritage of the “huerta”. The tour also includes the Carlos Soriano Ethnological Museum in El Llano, which is home to a small chapel, a water wheel and of course its own “huerto” garden.
Departure is at 10.30 from the side of the main Town Hall building in Avenida de Madrid, and those booking are warned that the event may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
Further information and bookings are available at the tourist office of Molina de Segura (Calle Pensionista, 3, telephone 968 388522, email oficinadeturismo@molinadesegura.es or marina.garcia@molinadesegura.es.
Online bookings can be made via the Murcia Turística site here.

As its name suggests, Molina de Segura lies on the banks of the River Segura and is considered to be the capital of the Comarca of the Vega Media del Segura.
The municipality covers an area of 169 square kilometres, and is just 10 kilometres from the capital city of the Murcia Region.
For this reason it is an important focal point of habitation for those who work in the capital city and 66% of its population live within the main urban area of the municipality.
Around the outskirts of the town itself are several major industrial areas, making this the fourth largest population concentration within the Murcia Region apart from Murcia City, Cartagena and Lorca.
Molina de Segura has an important industrial heritage and the tourist office offers guided visits to highlight the industrial past of the area, from which an important contemporary art industry has emerged. Several major artists working in the region today are resident and work in this area, and Molina de Segura has accumulated an important art collection as a result.
The town is also surrounded by agricultural cultivation, making this a practical choice for those seeking rural accommodation close to the capital city.
