Orihuela Costa cliff walk set for major lighting overhaul

The lights will be replaced in Aguamarina, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and Punta Prima

Good news for those who enjoy walking along the seafront promenades of Orihuela Costa: the long-awaited replacement of the streetlights is finally on the way. The City Council has announced that they are moving forward with a project to install a brand-new public lighting system on the most well-trodden parts of the cliff walk: Aguamarina in Cabo Roig, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and Punta Prima.

These scenic pedestrian paths, which offer stunning views over the Orihuela Costa waters, are a favourite spot for both locals and tourists all year round. As part of the Orihuela Tourism Sustainability Plan, the Tourism and Infrastructure departments have teamed up to make this project happen, with a budget of 198,505 euros funded by the European Union's Next Generation funds.

The project will roll out over the next three months, with the goal of modernising the lighting all along the cliff walk, which can be treacherous underfoot at night. According to the City Council, the current streetlights are showing signs of wear and tear and are really outdated. The existing lamps consume too much energy, provide low light output and are pretty worn down from years of use.

The new lighting will feature energy-efficient LED lamps that will brighten up the area while cutting energy consumption by 60%. This upgrade is part of the city’s plan to reduce its carbon footprint and meet sustainability goals.

While the street lamps will stay in their current spots, the old vertical supports will be cleaned up and new, high-tech fixtures will be installed. The harsh coastal weather, including humidity, has caused a lot of rust and corrosion on the current lights.

One area where residents have been especially vocal is the railing along the promenade from Cala de La Mosca to Cala Capitán. In some sections, the railing has deteriorated so much that it's been covered with temporary fences or even police tape.

Improving public lighting has also been a top priority for locals, not just on the promenades but also on nearby streets. With safety concerns on the rise, this long-overdue upgrade has come as a welcome relief.
