Overflowing rubbish bins lead to rat infestation in Orihuela Costa

Residents of the Orihuela Costa are up in arms over the recent "outbreaks of rats" caused by the "chaos" in the rubbish collection service. The Cabo Roig y Lomas Neighbourhood Association has taken to social media to express their discontent, sharing images of overflowing trash containers in several urbanisations.

According to the association, the problem stems from the lack of adequate resources and personnel to handle the increased demand during the Easter holidays. They claim that certain areas have experienced delays of up to five days in waste collection, resulting in unsanitary conditions that have attracted swarms of rodents.

The worst affected neighbourhoods include Mil Palmeras, Playa Flamenca, La Florida, Lomas de Cabo Roig, Montezenia, La Regia, La Zenia, Villapiedra and Dehesa de Campoamor. Residents have reported seeing rat infestations in the area, which they believe is a direct consequence of the poor waste management.

The neighbourhood association has criticized the local government for not addressing the issue promptly, stating that the current situation is "shameful" and "violates the dignity of residents and tourists alike."

They argue that the town's image is being tarnished by the neglect of basic services, especially given the large influx of visitors during the holiday season.

In response to the backlash, municipal sources acknowledge that there have been some issues with waste collection due to a broken-down truck, but they maintain that the problems are not as widespread as claimed by the residents.

Meanwhile, the city council has recently inaugurated a new street cleaning work centre on the coast, which cost 860,000 euros and took five and a half years to complete. The facility is intended to improve working conditions for sanitation staff and provide better services to the community. However, the launch of the new centre has done little to alleviate the current waste crisis.

The Cabo Roig y Lomas Neighbourhood Association has called on the local government to take immediate action to address the waste collection problem, citing the urgent need for additional resources and personnel to ensure proper waste management.

Until then, the group said, residents will continue to suffer the consequences of the "chaos" in the garbage collection service.
