ARCHIVED - Plenty of Christmas sunshine and temperatures in the 20s: Spain forecast Dec 23-26
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The mercury will remain well above average in most of Spain all Christmas weekend
It’s official: 2022 has been the warmest year ever recorded, according to Spain’s meteorological agency, AEMET, and the third driest 12-month period since records began back in 1961. The good news is that Christmas weekend will follow a similar trend to the rest of the year, with above-average temperatures and plenty of dry, sunny spells, although the rain certainly isn’t gone for good.
The coming days will be dominated by the arrival of an Atlantic storm that will bring some showers and heavy rain to the north of the country, although at the moment there’s still some uncertainty surrounding its exact direction.
Galicia, which has been bearing the brunt of the bad weather for weeks, is in for another damp day on Friday December 23 and is the only place in Spain to be issued with a yellow weather warning for rain and adverse sea conditions.
The rest of the peninsula will be slightly overcast or mostly clear with a sunny day forecast for the Canary Islands, although some drizzle could make its way down into central Spain.
Temperatures will drop in the northwest but will increase everywhere else, most notably along the southern coast, where Alicante and Murcia will bask in heat approaching the mid-20s.
However, a southwesterly wind will hit the Mediterranean and Cantabrian coasts in the afternoon bringing a slight chill.
Christmas Eve
The Atlantic front will continue to dump plenty of heavy rain in Galicia, Asturias and the northwest of Castilla y León but in the southeast and northeast of the country, an anticyclone will deliver clear, bright skies. Elsewhere could begin cloudy but this too will clear towards the afternoon.
Daytime temperatures will dip ever so slightly in most areas but Christmas Eve will be pleasant overall with the mercury remaining in the high-teens and 20s in the south.
Christmas Day
At the moment it looks like the front will continue to affect the northwest of Spain on December 25, although there are no weather warnings in place. The showers could spread weakly to the west in the afternoon but for the most part, the rest of the country and the Balearic Islands will enjoy a sunny Christmas Day with the mercury taking yet another upswing.
In the south, the thermometers will hover around the low-20s in much of Andalucia and Alicante, while Murcia will again enjoy spring-like maximums of 24ºC.
Monday December 26
Boxing Day, or St Stephen’s Day, will be a good deal warmer than normal in the southern half of Spain and in the Balearic Islands, but the Canary Islands are in for some heavy rain and mostly cloudy skies.
The northern half of Spain is likely to be damp once more but the anticyclonic weather will prevail in the south, where it will be overcast in the morning but clear come the afternoon.
