Plummeting temperatures and widespread frost: Spain weather forecast January 13-16

A polar air mass will bring frigid temperatures to all of Spain later in the week, although most regions should remain dry

This week will start off pleasant and mild in most of Spain but after a chilly weekend, the temperatures will continue to plummet throughout the country. As the days go by, a new front will approach the country, resulting in widespread frosts and more wintery weather overall.

However, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the rains of the past couple of weeks will remain at bay for the most part.

“During the next week, a mass of cold air from northern Europe will reach our country: frost will be widespread in the interior of Spain. This continental air is dry, so there will hardly be any rain, except in isolated points of the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands," an Aemet spokesperson explained.

Monday January 13

Monday should be clear, dry and bright across the county with the exception of the Mediterranean, where a low pressure system will result in overcast skies and some scattered, stormy showers along the south-east coast.

Temperatures will continue to fall across the board, most notably in the southwest and northeast. As a result, frosts will become even more widespread and intense, affecting most of inland Spain.

Tuesday January 14

Another weather front located in North Africa will likely bring stormy intervals to the Strait of Gibraltar and these could spread in a weaker way to parts of the Balearic Islands and the southern coasts of the Mediterranean.

Daytime temperatures will experience few changes aside from small decreases in the extreme south.

Frost will continue to affect most inland regions with the exception of western Andalucía.

Strong northerly winds have prompted Aemet to issue yellow warnings for rough sea conditions in the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.

Wednesday January 15

An anticyclone will continue to dominate on Wednesday, with clear or partly cloudy skies forecast across the board and virtually no rain on the horizon.

The mercury should take a welcome upswing in most of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, although the night could be a little cooler than previous days.

Frosts will still be present but they should also be less intense than earlier in the week.

Thursday January 16

The arrival of a new low pressure system from the northeast will increase instability on Thursday, which could lead to showers, occasionally with storms, in the Balearic Islands and on the Mediterranean and Alboran coasts. If it arrives, this rain could extend towards inland Spain.

Temperatures are expected to rise in most of the country, especially in the Mediterranean area and the Balearic Islands, and to fall in the northwest, with little change in the Canary Islands. Frost will lose intensity, although it will continue to affect most inland towns.
