ARCHIVED - Polar trough brings freezing temperatures to Spain: weather update January 4
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The mercury will continue to drop across Spain all week with some rain expected on Three Kings
Spain leaped into 2021 with historically high temperatures and decidedly spring-like weather after a cooler start to the month, with communities such as Catalonia registering 30 degrees on New Year’s Eve. Sadly, this is all about to change, as Aemet has predicted the arrival of a new ‘Polar Vaguada’ in the coming days which signals plummeting temperatures.
In the past, January has brought violent storms such as Filomena in 2021 and Gloria the previous year, and while the experts don’t foresee similar widespread devastation this month, the weather is set to change radically across Spain from Tuesday January 4.
Vaguada Polar
The so-called polar trough is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs when “the pressure is low with respect to the neighbouring regions at the same level”. It draws a kind of V that directs low pressure to a specific place, resulting in large bands of clouds, heavy rainfall and a very considerable drop in temperatures.
Outlook
As of Tuesday January 4, the thermometers will begin to register a progressive decline, particularly in the east and north of the peninsula and temperatures could plummet by as much as ten degrees, bringing the weather more in line with what is usual for this time of year.
As the week goes on, the change in air mass will also lead to an unusual increase in rainfall in some areas such as the Canary Islands and the Gulf of Valencia. In contrast, the rest of the country will experience the drop in temperatures but will remain almost totally dry.
On Tuesday evening the night frosts will return to inland areas, while Wednesday will dawn will strong winds throughout the country that will arrive “with intensity” on the Mediterranean coast. Rain is expected in the norther third of the peninsula early on but will extend to the western half of Andalucía by evening.
The temperatures will continue their decline and could drop between six and 10 degrees compared to Tuesday.
The Three Kings
Winter weather will herald the arrival of the Three Kings on Thursday, threatening the national parades with a forecast of bitter cold below 0 degrees in many inland areas, including in some areas of the Region of Murcia. It will continue to rain in Andalucía but the wet weather will dry off throughout the day in the northern half of Spain.
