Rain gives way to higher temperatures this weekend: Spain weather forecast Jan 11-14

Weather outlook on Sunday January 14

At the beginning of the week, a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) emerged over the northeast of Spain and the Balearic Islands at the same time as an Atlantic low crossed the southwest of the country and the Mediterranean. This resulted in widespread rain, maritime storms, plunging temperatures and snow at low levels.

This brief but violent wintery episode has its hours numbered however, and from Thursday evening the DANA will begin to weaken and the rainfall will subside, disappearing completely by Friday in most of the country.

Daytime temperatures will hit rock bottom on Thursday before beginning a gradual increase on Friday, leading us into a very pleasant January weekend.

Thursday January 11

The tail-end of the DANA will result in fairly cloudy skies throughout Spain but the rain will ease off at the end of the day everywhere but Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, where strong storms are still forecast.

Thursday will be the coldest day of the week and nighttime temperatures too will fall in most of the country, dropping below zero in many areas. This will encourage frosts, which will hit much of inland Spain.

Friday January 12

In the Canary Islands, with the approach of an Atlantic front associated with Storm Hipólito from the west, cloudiness will increase, with precipitation on the westernmost islands. The weather will stabilise in the rest of Spain and the Balearic Islands though, and the day is predicted to be mostly bright and clear.

However, there is still a chance of early morning cloudiness and weak showers in the Balearics and eastern Andalucia.

Daytime temperatures will take a much needed upswing across the board, although it will remain chilly in the southeast. The mercury will take another dip on Friday night in most parts, favouring frosts inland.

Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid and the Basque Country have all been placed on yellow alert for sub-zero temperatures during the early hours.

Saturday January 13

A fairly weak Atlantic front associated with Storm Horacio will enter from the northwest, increasing cloud cover and bringing a chance of rain in Galicia and the Canary Islands.

There is a slim chance of scattered showers elsewhere but for the most part Saturday should be dry and bright along the coasts.

Both day and nighttime temperatures will start to creep up in most of Spain, and the Canary Islands will register unusually high values for this time of year.

Andalucia has been issued with a yellow weather warning for rough seas until 3pm.

Sunday January 14

As the Atlantic front persists, abundant cloudiness will extend from west to east, but any stormy episodes will be confined once again to Galicia and its surrounds. It will be a rather cloudy day along the Mediterranean coats with a few clear spells during the afternoon.

The good news is that the temperatures will shoot up practically everywhere, returning to the 20s in much of southern Spain.
