Red weather alert for storms in Malaga: Aemet warns of extreme weather conditions that could pose a risk to life

More than 3,000 people have already been evacuated from their homes in the Costa del Sol ahead of the weather warning on November 13

Weather alerts on Wednesday November 13

The beginning of the week has been mild and pleasant enough in the Costa del Sol but this peace was shattered on Tuesday night, November 12, when the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) upgraded the weather warning in Malaga to red – its highest level of alert.

The red weather warning will come into force at 10am on Wednesday November 13 and remain in place until midnight. A red alert warns of extreme, severe weather conditions – in this case, torrential rain and driving winds leading to flash flooding – and people are implored to remain indoors and avoid travel unless it’s an emergency.

When a red warning is activated, there’s a high probability of widespread damage and even a risk to life.

More than 3,000 people have already been evacuated from their homes in the affected areas, and schools, social centres, ITV test centres and universities have been closed due to the forecast of heavy rain.

The regional government has activated the Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Andalucía (PERI), which includes the deployment of emergency response units and the evacuation of people from high-risk areas.

The red alert is activated for the Costa del Sol, the Guadalhorce Valley, the Axarquía and the capital of Malaga, where rainfall of up to 120 litres per square metre in twelve hours is possible.

In addition, an orange alert, representing a significant risk, will be in effect from 3am on Wednesday until 10am in Antequera, with rainfall that could reach 40 litres in one hour. The Ronda region, for its part, will be on yellow alert.

The Serranía de Ronda will have a yellow warning in effect for heavy rainfall that could reach 60 litres per square metre in 12 hours and 20 litres in one hour. It will remain active at the same time as the orange warnings in the rest of the regions.

Weather alerts on Thursday November 14

On Thursday November 14, the situation will remain complicated in the morning and will improve as the afternoon progresses. The Costa del Sol, the metropolitan area of the capital and the Guadalhorce Valley will be the areas that will remain under orange warning for accumulations of up to 105 litres in 12 hours and up to 40 litres in one hour. On this occasion, "the heaviest rainfall is expected in the westernmost areas," Aemet stressed . The warning will remain active from midnight until 8am on Thursday.

The regions of Axarquía and Serranía de Ronda will remain under the same schedule, but under yellow alert, due to the accumulation of water in one hour of up to 20 litres per square meter, and in 12 hours of 60 litres.
