Renewable energy accounts for 43 per cent of the energy mix in the Region of Murcia
This number puts Murcia 13 points below the national average in Spain
An impressive 43% of the electricity produced in the Region of Murcia is now renewable. However, it has been discovered that this number is 13 points lower than the average in Spain. The new pull of solar photovoltaics (solar panels) however has helped improve the amount of clean energy produced in Murcia by 10 points compared to last year.
The share of solar photovoltaics in the regional mix of Murcia had gone from 26% to 36%. This is followed by wind production with 4.5%; hydraulic, with 1.3%; solar thermal, with 0.5%; and other 'green' sources, with 0.3%.
However, non-renewable energy still reigns supreme in the Region, with 56.9% of the total mix of energy. Of this, 41.2% is provided by combined cycle plants (located in Escombreras) and 15.7% by cogeneration plants.
The Ministry of Environment, Universities, Research and Mar Menor said in a statement yesterday that the Region “experienced a 30% growth in photovoltaic installations during 2024, a year in which it added 115 megawatts (MW) of self-consumption and reached 31,800 installations.”
Furthermore, according to the Ministry, the Community “reaffirms its position as a benchmark in renewable energies thanks to the continued growth of the photovoltaic sector.” The total power of photovoltaic parks in the Region amounts to 1,715 MW, including the plants authorised in recent months by the regional government and the central government.
Moreover, the Environment Department claims to have promoted photovoltaic park projects within its power. Since 2023, it has authorised plants with a total capacity of 389 MW, after an investment exceeding 270 million euros. And in 2024 it authorised operations with an additional 195 MW.
Therefore, because of these steps made by the government, the Region managed to avoid the emission of 2.2 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of almost 478,000 combustion vehicles or the absorption capacity of 100 million trees.
As we step into 2025, there’s no better time to harness the power of the sun. Choosing solar energy is more than an environmentally conscious decision - it’s a savvy financial investment that delivers lasting savings for your home.
