Rest in peace Silvana Buxton, Mazarron Councillor for Camposol and International Relations

It is with the deepest sorrow that Camposol Today and associated publications report the passing of Silvana Buxton, Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations

With profound regret, the owners and writers of Camposol Today, Mazarrón Today and Murcia Today sadly report the passing on Friday, October 20, at the age of 75, of Silvana Buxton, who for over 4 years has represented Camposol and the International Community in the municipality of Mazarrón.

Silvana was Italian by birth but lived much of her life in England although never losing the Latin passion for causes she felt needed help, also serving as a Justice of the Peace. Married to Geoff, she was a mother of three and a grandmother of seven.

A linguist of some repute, Silvana had a degree in Languages, specialising in Italian, English, Spanish and French. Silvana and Geoff lived in France for seven years and at the time of her passing she was nearing the finals of a Master’s degree in Linguistics.

Silvana and Geoff made Camposol their home in early 2014 and in September of the same year suffered the effects of the infamous Gota Fria flood that struck Camposol causing extensive damage along the path of the Rambla de los Aznares, their property being in the path of the rapidly flooding riverbed. This event was to trigger Silvana’s dedication to improving the various and pressing problems facing the Camposol urbanisation.

After joining the Camposol Residents Association, becoming Vice President and then acting President, and being the driving force behind the push to get the Murcia Regional Assembly to investigate the problems facing Camposol, Silvana soon realised that as the only Spanish speaker on the committee the best route was to be on the “inside”. With the blessing of the then CRA Committee she stood in the 2019 municipal election as a PSOE Councillor, winning a seat and being appointed Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol and International Relations. Although this new role presented its own problems with administrative red tape and council procedures, Silvana never gave up and was the President of the Mazarrón Council Commission which proposed the forming of the Rambla de los Aznares round table to include regional and national government departments.

Such was Silvana’s persistence that the Round Table was approved within 2 months of the new council taking power.

Silvana worked tirelessly for Camposol and the International Community, sometimes becoming infuriated at the slowness and procedures inherent in the Council’s functioning, but never stopped trying. This attitude prompted Mazarrón Mayor, Ginés Campillo, to announce today on behalf of the town council that he wishes to express his deepest condolences for this painful loss: “Silvana leaves us a lasting legacy. Her commitment to the well-being of citizens, and especially her dedication to solving Camposol’s problems, symbolises a testament to her tireless work in the public interest. In this moment of mourning, we extend our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues in the socialist group and to the entire Camposol community.”
