Rise in temperatures this weekend: Murcia weather forecast January 9-12
Temperatures are set to rise above 20°C from this Thursday, offering a brief respite from the winter chill
The Region of Murcia is poised for a spring-like interlude as temperatures are expected to climb significantly from Thursday January 9 onwards. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts that coastal and inland areas alike will bask in daytime highs exceeding 20°C, marking a stark contrast to the chilly start to the year.
For much of January so far, residents have been bundling up against cold mornings and evenings, but a shift in atmospheric conditions promises milder weather, with some even considering beachwear during the warmest part of the day.
According to Juan José Gómez, Aemet’s regional spokesperson, the rise in temperatures is attributed to an anticyclonic weather pattern. This stable system features clear skies, no rain and only light winds with a south-southwesterly flow carrying warm air from lower latitudes.
“These conditions will result in notable increases in maximum daytime temperatures, which will reach 22-23°C in many parts of the region,” Gómez explained. However, the Northwest and Altiplano areas are expected to experience slightly cooler conditions.
Sunny spells are expected on Friday and Sunday, while Thursday and Saturday may see cloudy intervals.
This warming trend will be short-lived, with colder conditions returning by Sunday. A shift to northerly winds will bring cooler air from northern Spain, causing maximum temperatures to plummet significantly.
“The sharp drop in temperatures on Sunday will be felt across the region, a result of the northerly wind’s influence,” Gómez noted.
This December just gone was officially classified as ‘very warm’, with an average monthly temperature of 10.7°C making it the eighth warmest December of the 21st century. Rainfall was sparse, with just 7.6 litres per square metre recorded – 41% of the average during the month of December.
