San Pedro makes waves with new accessible bathing facilities

San Pedro del Pinatar is making waves in the pursuit of inclusive beach experiences for all. The town's commitment to accessibility shines through with the recent spotlight on its three adapted bathing points, ensuring that people with disabilities can enjoy the sun, sea and sand just like everyone else.

Mayor Pedro Javier Sánchez, alongside the General Director of People with Disabilities, Miriam Pérez, recently visited the adapted point on Villananitos beach, and pointed out that San Pedro is continuously working hand in hand with different organisations to make sure that all tourist areas are as accessible as possible.

San Pedro del Pinatar now has three adapted bathing points on the beaches of La Puntica, Villananitos and El Mojón, which are staffed by trained lifeguards every day from 11.30am to 7.30pm. All three are equipped with amphibious chairs, crutches and hoists.

These points also boast access walkways, shaded areas, adapted toilets and footbaths.

One of the standout features is the bathing island at Villananitos, a unique structure anchored to benches and providing shade right in the water. This innovative platform allows up to 22 people to bathe simultaneously while enjoying the stability and buoyancy it offers.

Complemented by a non-slip aquatic walkway, individuals with reduced mobility can now independently access the water and enjoy a refreshing dip.

The town hasn't stopped there. Over the years, with the invaluable advice and support of FAMDIF, they've enhanced these adapted points. Improvements include increasing the number of amphibious chairs, expanding shaded areas, widening walkways and even enabling access platforms to changing rooms and footbaths.

These enhancements ensure that individuals with disabilities can not only access the beach but also enjoy a comfortable and dignified experience during their visit.

The impact of these adaptations is evident in the high rate of use, with both individuals and local associations like AIDEMAR and AFEMAR regularly taking advantage of these accessible points.

San Pedro del Pinatar's commitment to accessibility extends beyond the beach, as the council continues to collaborate across the board to ensure that the town offers inclusive, safe and clean spaces for all to enjoy.
