Saturday, Sunday and Monday weekly markets in the Region of Murcia
From small to large, from vegetables to household appliances, markets in Murcia over the weekend
The following weekly markets are held in the Region of Murcia on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, although please note that some of these events may alter their schedules during the summer months or to co-incide with local fiestas.
In addition, markets may be cancelled or altered due to bad weather and local or regional holidays: if in doubt, make enquiries at the local tourist office to avoid a wasted trip.
As a general rule the weekly markets are open from 9.00 to 14.00.
Open-air markets ar always popular with visitors, offering an opportunity to buy fresh produce and bargain clothes. Many also feature a range of products from plants and flowers to frying pans, baby clothes and electronic equipment: the larger the market, the more variety on offer!
They're crowded affairs, full of colour and noise as shoppers jostle for space, queue at stalls, stand and socialize and generally enjoy the experience of shopping at a relaxed pace!
Cautionary tips
When buying fruit, choose stalls that have prices clearly marked and always ask for the receipt so you can check you've not been overcharged. Traders are obliged by law to give a receipt with a purchase, so don't be shy of asking for one if you feel the bill may not be correct. It's always advisable to check the bill and make sure that the correct price per kilo has been charged and the number of items you have corresponds to the receipt (in Spanish “ticket”).
Watch out for pickpockets: crowded areas such as markets tend to attract them all the world over, and don't be scared to rummage, everyone does and that’s half the fun of it!
If you intend to buy a reasonable amount of fruit and veg, it's worth investing in a shopping trolley which can be found in all "bazaar-type" stores. Taking your own plastic bags to recycle is also good for the environment!
Saturday markets
Central Murcia and the regional capital
Abanilla - in the centre of Abanilla, in the Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza de la Purísima, Calle /Pío XII and Calle Mayor.
Archena - in the southern outskirts of the town, on Camino Pago Barranco (click for location), a good-sized event with around 145 stalls
Molina de Segura - in the Parque de la Compañía, the large park at the heart of the town. All over the Region of Murcia there are markets held in small- and medium-sized towns, offering chances to pick up some fresh fruit and veg, a few plants or some items of clothing, but this, like the main markets of Murcia and Cartagena, is shopping on a very different scale.
Among the 400-plus stalls are numerous food outlets and others selling everything from leather jackets to furniture, hand-sewn baby clothes and cot linen. In among them, of course, there is no shortage of stalls offering sustenance to the weekend shoppers!
El Esparragal (municipality of Murcia)
Llano de Brujas (municipality of Murcia) - in Calle Obispo Javier Azagra
Nonduermas (municipality of Murcia) - in Carril de los Párraga
