ARCHIVED - September 3 to 19 Annual fiestas in Molina de Segura
The fiestas in Molina are held in honour of the Virgen de la Consolación and include romerías, a fairground, a folk festival, José Mercé and numerous other concerts, an arts and crafts market and a host of other events
Molina de Segura may not be among the chief tourist destinations in the Region of Murcia but in terms of population it is the fourth largest, and in consequence the annual fiestas are very popular and well attended and the entertainment on offer is extremely attractive.
The fiestas are dedicated to the Virgen de la Consolación, who has been venerated in Molina since the 14th or 15th century, and round off the summer after many residents return from holidays at the beach or elsewhere. The festivities begin with a traditional “Romería”, in which the figure of the Patron is taken from the church which bears her name to the main parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, on the first Saturday of the month. This Romería is known to date back at least as far as the 18th century.
The fiestas also include a procession from the square outside the Town Hall which culminates in a floral offering at the Iglesia de la Asunción, and on the third Monday of the month the Virgen de la Consolación is returned to “her” church in another Romería.
These religious events are accompanied every year by a wide and varied cultural offering, including float parades, exhibitions, the folklore festival, sports tournaments, fireworks and numerous concerts.
Most of the concerts scheduled for the 2022 are free of charge and are taking place in the Plaza de España, the new “Recinto de Eventos” and the Auditorio Municipal Tomás Fernández Gil, although other venues are also being used, with the bill including artists such as flamenco titan José Mercé, Camela, Celtas Cortos, OBK, Edurne and DVicio.

For more upcoming events go to the What’s On section of Murcia Today.

As its name suggests, Molina de Segura lies on the banks of the River Segura and is considered to be the capital of the Comarca of the Vega Media del Segura.
The municipality covers an area of 169 square kilometres, and is just 10 kilometres from the capital city of the Murcia Region.
For this reason it is an important focal point of habitation for those who work in the capital city and 66% of its population live within the main urban area of the municipality.
Around the outskirts of the town itself are several major industrial areas, making this the fourth largest population concentration within the Murcia Region apart from Murcia City, Cartagena and Lorca.
Molina de Segura has an important industrial heritage and the tourist office offers guided visits to highlight the industrial past of the area, from which an important contemporary art industry has emerged. Several major artists working in the region today are resident and work in this area, and Molina de Segura has accumulated an important art collection as a result.
The town is also surrounded by agricultural cultivation, making this a practical choice for those seeking rural accommodation close to the capital city.
