Showers for the start of spring: Spain weather forecast March 18-21
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
It will be quite warm overall, but the north and northeast will have a wet and stormy week
In the early part of this week in Spain, the weather will mainly be nice and sunny, but the start of spring on Wednesday will be a bit rainier.
For Monday March 18, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts “possible locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the mountains of Galicia and the Cantabrian area”, an area which is on yellow warning for accumulated rainfall of up to 15mm per hour between 4pm and 10pm. In the east of the Canary Islands, they are predicting that there could be foggy, dusty calima, while the southern coast of mainland Spain could see misty and foggy patches.

While the north of Spain gets some rain, the central and southern parts will be sunny on both Monday and on Tuesday, March 19. For this day, the calima in the Canary Islands will ease off somewhat, while the localised storms in the north continue.
Spain weather forecast, Tuesday March 19
It is on Wednesday March 20, the spring equinox and the official start of springtime, when the rains and storms spread across much of northern Spain and down to Madrid. In addition, Aemet forecasts snow levels in this northern half of the peninsula to drop to 800/1,200m in the extreme northwest, and to 1,500/2,000m in the rest of the north.
They also predict “cloudy intervals in the Balearic Islands, and also in the northern Canary Islands, where weak precipitation is not ruled out in the mountainous islands”, while “mist and morning fog are likely in the extreme north of the peninsula… the far west, the lower Ebro and the Balearic Sea”.
Temperatures will fall practically across the board and sharply, with the exception of increases in the minimum temperatures in northwest Galicia. Winds from the north and east are expected in the Levante and from the west becoming northerly in the rest of the peninsula. Generally light inland, but more intense than in previous days, with the possibility of strong gusts.

Thursday March 21 will be drier overall and temperatures will begin to creep back up, especially in the south where it could be over 30ºC as we approach the end of the week.
