Sign the petition to save the Cueva de las Estegamitas cave on the Costa del Sol

The Spanish Association of Caving and Canyoning (Asociación Española de Espeleología y Barrancos or ASEDEB) is collecting signatures via a petition set up on change.org for the conservation of the Cueva de las Estegamitas cave in Málaga.

They are making this request directly to the Junta de Andalucía regional government board and to Votorantim Cimentos, a company that operates in the place; and hopes that the collection of signatures will raise awareness of the importance of the place to both.

The Cueva de las Estegamitas is located in the quarry of the La Araña cement factory, in the province of Málaga, and is an “exceptional geological treasure unique in the world”.

The association noted that the prestigious magazine National Geographic highlighted the importance of this space in several of its publications.

ASEDEB also explained in its statement that the existence of this space is threatened by ongoing industrial activities: “This natural heritage not only has incalculable scientific but also cultural and historical value for Andalusia and all of Spain.”

Málaga City Council has already voted in favour of the protection of this space, after the latest studies carried out inside the cave showed its great geological value.

In fact, the Councillor for Environmental Sustainability, Penélope Gómez, said that “multiple European laboratories and researchers have proposed to help in the research due to its high value.”

You can visit an open exhibition showing the historical, geological and cultural significance of the Cueva de las Estegamitas in the Salón de actos de la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País (located at Plaza de la Constitución, 7) from now until Friday February 2.

The exhibition is made up of a wide selection of photographs and videos for visitors to learn more about the geological characteristics of the cave, as well as its scientific importance. The exhibition is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 11am to 2pm and from 6pm to 9pm, and on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm.
