Six new high-speed trains lines are coming to Alicante station

The works will increase the capacity of high-speed trains in the station to ten lanes

The green light has been given to the work on six new high-speed train lines in Alicante. The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has granted permission for the go-ahead of the expansion of the train lines that will reinforce the Mediterranean Corridor up and down the east coast.

The project will cost 20.2 million euros and will be completed by the UTE Rover Rail SA, Rover Infraestructuras SA and Elecnor Servicios y Proyectos SAU. These companies have a rich history in railway infrastructure and are also working on the construction of the central tram station in Alicante.

The modernisation of the railway terminal aims to remodel the facilities to adapt them to the growing demands of railway traffic and reinforces its role in the railway connectivity of the Valencian Community and the south-east of Spain.

The project has been put in place in order to strengthen connectivity and absorb the increase in users resulting from previous improvements in the sector, which has brought high-speed trains from all over Spain to Alicante.

The station currently has four high-speed lines in standard gauge, to which six new ones will be added thanks to this project. Moreover, the scope of the works includes the complete renovation of the railway infrastructure and the spaces dedicated to users.

The passenger building will also benefit from the remodeling, and there will be improvements made to the new check-in areas of the station. Furthermore, acoustic protections will also be installed in the north and south areas to minimise the impact of rail traffic on the local community.

Following the work, the Alicante station will be able to handle a significantly higher number of people and railway traffic. Moreover, the optimised layout allows for more efficient use of space and guarantees the operational flexibility required for high-speed, medium-distance and commuter rail services.

Therefore, the work which has now been given the go ahead will help to strengthen Alicante’s connections with the rest of the country and allow for greater traveling comfort for all of the passengers.
