ARCHIVED - Sizzling temperatures and tropical nights: Alicante weather June 20-23
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Highs of 37ºC are once again forecast in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province
Tropical nights look set to be a constant across Alicante province until the end of the summer with the mercury unlikely to drop significantly over the next couple of months.
According to the director of the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante (UA), Jorge Olcina, the "recent warm episode" has not only "activated" a thermal escalation during the day but also at night, especially on the coast.
From now until September, and perhaps even October, Olcina predicts that it will be "rare" for minimum night temperatures to fall below 20 degrees in coastal areas.
And although the heatwave is "subsiding slightly", the mercury will remain high this week with maximums of 37ºC in parts of the Vega Baja area, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Low cloud with possible haze will mark the start of Monday June 20 with cloudy intervals in the afternoon, particularly along the north coast of the province. A light southeasterly wind will feel stronger in coastal areas later in the afternoon.
Alcoy: 19ºC (min) to 35ºC
Alicante: 20ºC to 30ºC
Denia: 21ºC to 33ºC
Elche: 19ºC to 34ºC
Orihuela: 19ºC to 37ºC
Light cloud is forecast on Tuesday morning June 21 and is expected to gather momentum from midday in inland areas where showers and thunderstorms have not been ruled out. These may spread towards the coast, albeit more scatted and weaker.

Cloudy skies with occasional scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast in the southern half of the province on Wednesday morning, June 22, although they are expected to clear up pretty quickly giving way to cloudy or clear skies. The mercury may fall very slightly and occasional strong winds are forecast in coastal areas. Further inland, a light variable wind is likely.
