Sizzling temperatures which saw much of Spain scorch in day-time temperatures in excess of 40ºC and tropical nights will subside this week, although the mercury is still likely to reach 30ºC in parts, and even higher in the Valencia region.

Spain is expected to experience the most intense heat episode seen in the month of May for more than two decades with the Region of Murcia and Andalusia already in the thick of the "extraordinary" heatwave. But for the next few days at least, there will be some reprieve as temperatures drop by up to nine degrees, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

"However, they will remain high, with temperatures of around 30 degrees in the eastern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands," added Aemet.

Monday May 23 will get off to a cloudy start in Galicia, the Cantabrian area and the Pyrenees, where precipitation is expected to spread from west to east thanks to a squall. Thunderstorms are also likely. The rest of the country can expect light cloud and weak isolated showers have not been ruled out.

Minimum temperatures will decrease in most of the country except in the Canary Islands, Huelva, Melilla, Murcia and Alicante. Westerly winds are forecast, except in Catalonia and Valencia, where they will more variable.

Due to a relatively unstable north-westerly northerly flow from the Atlantic, cloudy skies are expected over most of the northern and north-eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula on Tuesday May 24, with scattered showers. Cloudy intervals are also forecast in the rest of the Peninsula, with a high probability of showers and thunderstorms in the south, particularly in the Valencian region. Daytime temperatures will be markedly lower almost everywhere in Spain, accompaned by a return of the winds.

Strong winds will mark much of Wednesday May 25, although clear skies are likely to prevail with occasional showers in Catalonia, parts of Valencia and the Balearic Islands, especially in the morning.

Daytime temperatures will rise in most of the west and north of the Iberian Peninsula and could reach 28ºC in the Region of Murcia and 31ºC in Sevilla.

An Atlantic anticyclone will favour a continuation of the "stabilisation process" and Aemet predicts clear skies with occasional showers on Thursday May 26.

Temperatures will rise almost across the board, and highs could exceed 30 degrees in the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys.

North and east winds will prevail, although the wind intensity will decrease somewhat towards the end of the day.
