In the past week, hospital pressure as a result of coronavirus has continued to drop and all of Spain is now considered to have the pandemic under control, with saturation levels below 5% in every region of the country. However, there’s been a slight upswing in the number of ICU beds occupied by Covid patients, with 11 more patients being treated for serious illnesses.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health registered an additional 7,417 cases of coronavirus on Friday March 24, a significant increase on the 4,696 infections reported on the same day last week.

This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,790,417.

Cumulative incidence rate

There’s been a 3-point downturn in the 14-day cumulative rate since the last report, which has dropped from 72.05 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 69.76. This is one of the lowest levels that this important health indicator has reached since the Covid Surveillance and Control Strategy was launched in March last year.

Moreover, the 7-day figure has fallen to 30.42, a strong indication that the health situation should improve.

Although it has one of the highest hospital saturation figures, the autonomous city of Ceuta continues to have the lowest incidence rate of just 13.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It’s followed by the Region of Murcia, with a rate of 34.47 while Andalucía has shaved off a point this week to stand at 35.42.

Castilla y León (121), Madrid (115), Galicia (109) and the Canary Islands (105), as well as Melilla (124) are the territories with the highest infection rates. Despite this, all regions are in controlled circulation, below 250 cases.

The highest incidence continues to be recorded in people over the age of 80, with a rate of 135.45 cases this week, followed by those aged between 70 and 79 (63.44) and between 60 and 69 (40.93).

Fatalities and hospitalisations

A further 298 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last 7 days, bringing the total number of deaths in Spain up to 120,170.

There are currently 2,014 patients hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain, down slightly from 2,145 last week, while 102 are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs – an increase of 11.

This means that 1.61% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients (down from 1.71%) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has increased from 1.03% a week ago to 1.16% today.

Vaccination data

As of March 27, 92.6% of the population over 12 (39,208,623 people) are double jabbed. In addition, 39,285,625 people over the age of 12, or 92.8% of the population, have received at least one dose.
