After virtually no let-up in the scalding temperatures for weeks now the tides are finally about to turn and while the thermometers will exceed 35ºC in much of the country between Thursday and Saturday, Aemet anticipates a dramatic change on Sunday.

Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo sees the coming weekend as "the final fireworks" in this prolonged episode of "very high temperatures that, without rest, have lasted since the beginning of July".

Thursday August 11

While a DANA is sweeping in across the north of Spain, leaving storms and heavy rain in its wake, for the most part Thursday will be another very warm, albeit largely cloudy, day.

"The highlight of Thursday will be the heat again," the spokesman said, adding that the mercury will rise in the north-west while remaining unchanged elsewhere.

Friday August 12

The Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands will be “especially hot” on Friday, exceeding 40ºC in many areas with little chance of sleep ahead, since we’re in for another torrid night where the thermometers won’t dip below 25ºC.

It will be another slightly cloudy day with winds bowing in from the west and scattered thunderstorms forecast in mountain areas.

Saturday August 13

The changes will begin on Saturday as a new weather front arrives, bringing greater instability and more dense cloud banks and storms, particularly in the north and south-west of the country later in the afternoon.

The temperatures will begin to drop in the west but there will be a "clear rise" on the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands. In the northern, eastern and southern areas, the mercury will be up to 10ºC higher than normal, and even somewhat more in the Balearic Islands.

Sunday August 14

"As of Sunday we expect a change in the prevailing atmospheric configuration in our country," Mr del Campo explained, predicting a dramatic drop in temperatures “in most of the country” in the days that follow.

The mercury will actually be a little lower on Sunday than is usual for this time of year, bringing widespread relief after several consecutive weeks of suffocating heat. The temperature dip should last well into the middle of next week, although the drop won’t be noticed as quickly in the south-east and the Balearic Islands.

Another bonus from this weather change is that temperatures in the western Mediterranean should start to cool down after reaching record-breaking highs since mid-May.
