Spain braces itself for the arrival of Storm Karlotta: Weather forecast Feb 8-11
After weeks of high pressure, the incoming stormy weather has placed half of Spain on high alert
The winter heatwave Spain has been enjoying for the past several weeks is sadly coming to an end, at least for the moment, with the arrival of Storm Karlotta just in time for the weekend. This front is expected to bring widespread rain and stormy episodes, placing much of the country on alert, and both day and night-time temperatures will take a nosedive in most regions.
Thursday February 8
The approach of Storm Karlotta will result in increasing cloud cover from west to east, leaving practically all of Spain very overcast by the end of the day. Heavy rainfall is expected in the western half of the country and while this could spread further, it’s unlikely to make it to the Mediterranean coast.
Daytime temperatures will fall everywhere that rain is forecast, with few changes expected elsewhere.
Moderate southwesterly winds in most of the country, with strong gusts in the northwest and the western coast of Andalucía.
Orange weather alert: Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Galicia and La Rioja.
Yellow weather alert: Andalucía, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Navarra and the Basque Country.
Friday February 9
The ongoing presence of an Atlantic front will lead to extensive cloud cover and widespread rain on Friday. With the exception of the eastern Mediterranean region, rainfall is expected to be plentiful, potentially becoming heavy or prolonged in certain areas of western Andalucía, Galicia, inland Spain, the Pyrenees and the Strait of Gibraltar. These storms may also produce thunderstorms in both Andalucía and Galicia.
Maximum temperatures will drop by a couple of degrees across the board but the evening should be a little warmer than previous days.
Intense winds are expected from the southwest, tending to roll to the west and northwest.
Yellow weather alert: Andalucía, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community, Ceuta and Melilla.
Saturday February 10
The unsettled weather is expected to persist, characterised by abundant cloud cover and widespread rain, which will be especially heavy in Galicia and the rest of the extreme north, inland Spain and the southeast mountains.
As the day progresses, clearings are expected to emerge, and rainfall will diminish in much of the country and the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will decline in most of Spain, with the most pronounced drops occurring in the northwest and the Pyrenees. The only area where thermometers are expected to rise slightly is the Mediterranean coast.
Intense winds from the west and north are forecast, with strong intervals and gusts on the Mediterranean coast.
Orange weather alert: Andalucía.
Yellow weather alert: Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community, Melilla.
Sunday February 11
A new Atlantic front will enter Spain on Sunday, leaving behind cloudy skies and rain on the Atlantic slope and in Andalucía. Although it’s unlikely, there is a small chance that this rain could extend to the Mediterranean coast.
Decreases in temperatures are expected in the eastern half of the country and the Balearic Islands, but the mercury will rise slightly in Andalucía, Galicia and the easternmost part of the Canary Islands.
The winds will be intense, predominantly from the west.
