The 14-day cumulative figure approaches 400 in Spain as hospital pressure soars in every region
Less than two weeks before Christmas, the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic shows no signs of slowing in Spain. The most recent data from the Ministry of Health, published on Monday December 13, show that the cumulative incidence rate jumped by another 58 points over the weekend, and hospital pressure is steadily increasing.
Covid infections
A further 49,802 coronavirus infections have been registered, 6,879 of which have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,339,992.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate continues to rise on a daily basis and now stands at 381.26 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 323.07 on Friday. Spain entered the high risk category for infections last Thursday and since then, the cases have been rising steadily.
Navarra (1,197.07), the Basque Country (905.06) and Aragon (728.83) are all at extreme risk of transmission, while nine other communities are now above the national average: Asturias (515.12), Balearic Islands (445.31), Castilla y León (520.98), Catalonia (428.87), Valencia (440.27), Galicia (444.92), Melilla (499.56), Murcia (387.23) and La Rioja (421.68).
Andalucía remains the community with the lowest incidence rate in the entire country, with 171.05 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 6,347 patients admitted with Covid throughout Spain and 1,116 people are being treated in the ICU for more serious cases.
The intensive care units in all autonomous communities and cities are now experiencing pressure above the 5% threshold recommended by the WHO, with the average sitting at 12.6%.
Catalonia (23.33%), La Rioja (22.64%) and the Basque Country (21.29%) are at the forefront in the highest occupancy of Covid patients, closely followed by Navarra (18.64%), Melilla (17.65%) and Aragon (17.27%).
In the last 24 hours, 746 people have been admitted to hospital while 326 patients have been discharged.
The Ministry has confirmed that a further 103 people have lost their lives to Covid, bringing the overall death toll to 88,484 people.
Omicron variant
According to the data released on Monday, so far a total of 36 cases of the omicron Covid variant have been discovered in Spain, 17 of which were diagnosed in travellers from South Africa or their close contacts, and 19 have been attributed to community transmission.
The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) has registered a total of 1,686 cases of omicron in the European Union and the European Economic Area, after confirming 920 cases in the last 24 hours alone.
Vaccination data
A total of 37,721,347 people, representing 89.6% of the target population, are now double jabbed while 38,514,698 people, or 91.4%, have received their first dose.
