ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 6: Incidence rate drops a further 22 points
ARCHIVED ARTICLE The number of new infections is also down but a further 133 people have died in Spain
Coronavirus infections throughout Spain have fallen substantially over the past seven days with 9,639 cases reported by the Ministry of Health on Monday September 6, down from 15,489 the previous week. Officials have cautioned, however, that the data for Catalonia isn’t included in these figures due to a technical issue, and so the actual number of infections is likely to be a little higher.
Cumulative Incidence
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate is also in decline, having dropped 22 points over the weekend to stand at 176.64 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This means that Spain is still in the ‘high risk’ category but every autonomous community in the country is experiencing similar declines, with Asturias even breaking the 100 case barrier to fall to just 70 infections.
The North African enclaves of Melilla and Cueta continue to have the highest cumulative incidence at 407 and 349 respectively, with Extremadura coming in third at 315. In order, the numbers for the other communities are as follows:
- Cantabria: 235
- The Basque Country: 235
- Castilla-La Mancha: 227
- La Rioja: 204
- Balearic Islands: 204
- Aragón: 198
- Madrid: 195
- Galicia: 184
- Navarra: 183
- Murcia Region: 174
- Andalucía: 167
- Castilla y León: 167
- Catalonia: 162
- Valencian Community: 135
- Canary Islands: 107
Across age ranges, the cumulative incidence rate is largely unchanged with those aged between 12 and 19 years old still representing the highest numbers (296).
Hospitals and Fatalities
Over the weekend, 133 Covid-related deaths were recorded, bringing the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 84,928. While this figure is still far too high, it marks a significant decrease compared to the 168 fatalities reported on Friday.
Both the number of people hospitalised on general wards and in the ICUs has fallen slightly, with 5,776 people admitted on Monday compared with 6,245 on Friday, meaning that now coronavirus patients are occupying fewer than 5% of beds. There are 1,382 people in intensive care, representing a 15.1% occupancy rate. However, ICU pressure in Madrid and Catalonia is substantially higher than the Spanish average, at 28.3% and 27.8% respectively.
Vaccines
More than 34 million people have now been fully vaccinated in Spain, with a total of 67,190,707 doses administered.
The rate of people testing positive for Covid, which has seen ups and downs in recent weeks, has dipped to 6.7% over the weekend, down from 8% last Friday.
