Spain enters June with more heavy rainfall and rising temperatures: weather forecast May 29-June 1

The torrential rain that has marked much of the second half of May will continue well into June, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which has forecast a “positive rainfall anomaly” for the coming week, meaning that the downpours will be heavier than normal for this time of year.

After a scorching April, the deluge has at least made an “important positive contribution” to the parched reservoirs, particularly in the east and south of Spain, and as we race towards the climatological summer that begins on June 1, Aemet expects the trend to be “similar”.

For now, the last week of May and the first week of June will begin with atmospheric instability that will favour showers in large areas of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, with greater probability and intensity in the northern and eastern regions.

Monday May 29 promises to be dreary throughout Spain, with abundant clouds, showers and storms forecast in a good part of northwestern Spain, the Pyrenees, the southeast and the west of the Balearic Islands. Weaker showers are possible virtually everywhere though, with the exception of the extreme southwest, and 13 regions have been placed on yellow alert for driving rain.

The temperatures should begin to climb in the south on Monday, both during the day and night, with little change in the rest of the country.

Alicante: 17ºC; 22ºC

Málaga: 18ºC; 27ºC

Murcia: 15ºC; 26ºC

Ten communities remain on alert for storms on Tuesday May 30 on a day that will be largely overcast once more. The worst of the weather will hit in northern and southeastern Spain, as well as in the Balearic Islands.

During the morning, showers and storms are also likely on the southern coast of the Valencian Community, Murcia and Almería, while the showers should miss the southwest of Spain and the Cantabrian coast.

Daytime temperatures will drop in the northern and southeastern third of the country, while Aemet expects few changes or slight increases in the rest.

Alicante: 16ºC; 22ºC

Málaga: 19ºC; 28ºC

Murcia: 14ºC; 25ºC

The instability is expected to continue on Wednesday May 31, although only Aragon remains on yellow alert. The day will be overcast across the board and while showers and stormy weather will continue to hit most areas throughout the day, things will dry up considerably along the coasts and in southwestern Spain.

The mercury will remain largely unchanged in most of the country, although daytime temperatures could creep up a bit in the extreme south, remaining at fairly normal values for this time of year.

Alicante: 16ºC; 24ºC

Málaga: 18ºC; 26ºC

Murcia: 15ºC; 27ºC

As we roll into June, very little change is expected on Thursday 1st, with a predominance of cloudy skies, showers and storms forecast in most areas, with the exception of the southwest and the southeast coasts, which should remain dry.

The rain could be particularly heavy inland during the afternoon, especially in northern Spain, with the highest accumulation of water expected in Cantabria and the northern Iberian mountains.

Temperatures will experience slight increases in the Canary Islands, on the Cantabrian slope and in the south of the Atlantic slope, with decreases elsewhere.
