Spain tourism booms thanks to British and German spending

Inflation certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing the Spanish tourism trade, as holidaymakers from abroad spent 22.6% more in the first four months of 2024 compared to last year, bringing in more than 31.5 billion euros. This means that not only are more international travellers visiting Spain, they’re spending more money to boot.

Among the tourists who have increased their daily spending the most, the traditional English and German holidaymakers stand out, leaving around 10 euros more in Spanish businesses per day.

And while Britons and Germans continue to be the most frequent visitors to the Costas, they’re closely followed by the United States, Ireland and Belgium.

According to the latest data released this week by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in April alone Spain welcomed 7.8 million foreign tourists who left 9.565 million euros in the country. Both figures are the highest ever recorded and exceed 2023’s numbers by 8.3% and 13.1%, respectively.

With these records, April put the finishing touch on a first quarter of 2024 in which almost 24 million international visitors arrived in Spain, 14.5% more than a year ago.

Both the number of tourists arriving and the amount of money they spend confirms the unstoppable growth of the holiday market, and this is certainly due in large part to the popularity of the country with visitors from the UK, 4.4 million of whom descended on Spain between January and April.

What’s interesting is that over the past few months, the increase in spending has greatly outpaced the impressive growth in visitor numbers. So for example, while the volume of tourists arriving from Britain and Germany has grown respectively by 16.9% and 12.9% compared to last year, they spent 23% more during their trips.

But in both cases, the important take-away is that Spain has completely recovered the ground lost during the pandemic and has blasted through the records of 2019.

In the first case, between January and April, travellers from the United Kingdom spent an average of 163 euros per day on their visit, 11 euros more than in the first quarter of 2023, maintaining the average length of stay at around one week. In the case of Germans, the average daily expenditure per tourist has increased by 9 euros to 154 euros. Their average stay is slightly longer than that of the English, reaching 8.5 days.
